Mattie Montgomery, a former metal band lead singer turned evangelist, says the prosperity gospel is no longer the biggest lie deceiving the church. Instead, he says, the “popularity gospel” has taken its place for young believers. Montgomery says, “Our generation struggles with the prosperity gospel, but our generation struggles with the popularity gospel. Our parents’ generation bought into the idea that if your ministry’s doing well financially, God must be in it. … Now we’re not chasing after money. We’re chasing after followers. We’re chasing after attention. We’re chasing after YouTube views, Facebook likes, attention.” He explains this phenomenon in a short but powerful teaching.
