Bruce Marchiano portrayed Jesus in the 1995 film The Gospel According to Matthew. In the word-for-word account, he showed Jesus in a light that many viewers were not accustomed to. “This is a Jesus who smiles, laughs and rolls up His sleeves to work and play with those He loves,” Marchiano said of his portrayal in a 1995 Charisma cover story.
To celebrate the film’s 15th anniversary, a special edition is now available. The DVD includes biographies, a soundtrack and the two-CD audio book, In the Footsteps of Jesus, in which Marchiano takes us behind the scenes and shares the impact this role had on him personally.
“As the apostle Paul writes,” Marchiano says of the film, “‘the gospel is the power of God unto salvation,’ and that was the concept—that the gospel would be put on film in the pureness of its power—and that means unaltered by any human scriptwriter.” Marchiano continues, “These 15 years later, not a day goes by that I don’t receive a testimony from some corner of the world, and that testimony is always the same, ‘This film changed my life.'”
