Vermont Rolls Back Law that Targets Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers

Faith-based pregnancy care centers in Vermont have successfully challenged officials over a law they say restricted their free speech and their services to women. As a result, state lawmakers have walked back on a measure and will no longer openly discriminate against the centers over their life-affirming service to their communities.

As CBN News reported, the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA), Aspire Now, and Branches Pregnancy Resource Center sued state officials in July 2023. They argued the state unconstitutionally restricted their speech and provision of services with a bill that was signed into law by Gov. Phil Scott.

According to Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a conservative non-profit legal group, the law only applied to pro-life pregnancy centers. It censored their ability to advertise services and to counsel women against abortion.

“[It] specifically targeted pro-life pregnancy centers as ‘limited services’ providers because they do not refer for or perform abortions. Under the law, pregnancy centers could be fined up to $10,000 for advertising their services in a way that Vermont’s pro-abortion attorney general believes is misleading,” the group explained. “An abortion facility that provides identical information would not be subject to the law.”

The state has now amended the language of the law to eliminate its targeting of pregnancy centers.

“We’re pleased that Vermont recognized it needed to amend its discriminatory law that unlawfully targeted faith-based pregnancy centers and restricted their ability to speak and act according to their conscience. Pregnancy centers must be free to serve and empower women and their families by offering the support they need without fear of unjust government punishment,” said ADF Legal Counsel Julia Payne Koon.

Supreme Court Weighs Case of Christian Counselor Punished for Biblical Guidance

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has agreed to hear the case of a Christian therapist who is challenging Colorado’s ban on “conversion therapy” that targets conversations meant to help minor clients accept their God-given gender and sexuality.

As CBN News previously reported, the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a non-profit legal group, is representing Kaley Chiles, a licensed counselor in Colorado.

ADF petitioned the high court in November to hear Chiles’ case after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit upheld Colorado’s Minor Conversion Therapy Law which “prohibits mental health professionals from providing ‘conversion therapy’ to minor clients.”

A counselor who violates Colorado’s Minor Conversion Therapy Law faces fines of up to $5,000 per violation, suspension from practice, and, in some cases, revocation of the counselor’s license.

According to ADF, many of Chiles’ clients seek her counsel because they share her Christian worldview and faith-based values.

“These clients believe their lives will be more fulfilling if they are aligned with the teachings of their faith,” reads a press statement. “Yet Colorado law censors Chiles from speaking words her clients want to hear because the government does not like the view she expresses.”

Their lawsuit alleges that while Colorado’s law prohibits counselors from encouraging clients to accept their bodies, it “allows counseling conversations that aim to steer young people toward a gender identity different than the client’s sex.”

“Such restrictions have ‘left some clinical staff fearful’ of ‘providing professional support’ to young people at all,” reads the petition. “That result leaves detransitioners — those who adopted a transgender identity but now identify with their biological sex — with no counseling support whatsoever in much of the United States.”

Colorado is among roughly half the states that ban people from finding freedom from gender dysphoria or unwanted same-sex attraction.

Colorado Attorney General Philip J. Weiser has criticized so-called “conversion therapy.”

“States have long regulated medical practices to protect patients from harmful professional conduct,” he said in a statement. “Colorado’s law protecting young people from unscientific and cruel gay conversion therapy practices is humane, smart, and appropriate.”

Chiles originally filed a lawsuit challenging the law, arguing that it violates the First Amendment’s Free Speech and Free Exercise clauses.

ADF CEO Kristen Waggoner said state officials have “no business censoring private conversations between clients and counselors.”

Mainline Christian Denomination Issues Surprise Repentance Statement

The Presbyterian Church in America has issued a statement of repentance after one of its websites published guidance advising illegal immigrants on how to avoid U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention.

The since-deleted page, published in January by the PCA’s Mission to North America, provided recommendations such as not carrying documents that show one’s country of origin and not disclosing information about criminal history. The guidance went viral on X last week, prompting swift backlash.

Following the removal of the resource, MNA Director Irwyn Ince released a statement of repentance, acknowledging the mistake:

Mission to North America serves the PCA for the advancement of Christ’s kingdom through our churches in the U.S. and Canada. We do this through a two-pronged focus on church planting and church vitality. Our church planting efforts facilitate starting and supporting new PCA churches. Our church vitality efforts provide ministry resources that enable our churches to grow in their outward facing missional engagement in their communities, loving neighbors as our Lord commands (Matt. 22:39). One such long-standing MNA ministry is our Refugee and Immigrant Ministry.

Recently, we posted links on our webpage to external organizations offering a wide range of recommendations and frequently asked questions on immigration. MNA’s leadership erroneously allowed the posting of content that advised undocumented persons on ways to avoid being detained by authorities.

We also apologize for causing confusion and consternation in our church. We have removed all the previously posted information from our website.

MNA’s Refugee & Immigrant Ministry, along with other MNA ministries, seeks to serve our churches with resources that enable them to faithfully follow our Lord’s call to love the stranger. However, MNA does not engage in providing legal advice, political campaigning or partisan positions. The information we post going forward will provide ecclesiastical resources in line with our Confession for guidance on the matter.

The MNA Permanent Committee is holding its Spring Meeting during the first week of March and this issue is docketed for further focused discussion as part of the Committee’s regular oversight of MNA’s ministries. The Committee does this work on behalf of the General Assembly of the PCA, which meets annually in June.

“We affirm that it is our Christian duty to obey the lawful commands of the civil magistrate and be subject to their authority,” Ince said, citing biblical passages and the Westminster Confession of Faith. “To counsel otherwise is a sin. We confess that we fell short of our Biblical and Confessional standard. We repent and apologize.”

As reported by The Christian Post, Zachary Groff, senior pastor at Antioch Presbyterian Church in Greer, South Carolina, and a member of the committee overseeing MNA, said many in the denomination were “very, very alarmed” by the guidance.

“The rank-and-file of the PCA is not at all pleased or supportive of what was published,” Groff said, calling it a “grave error in judgment.”

He added that while the guidance was misguided, he believes it stemmed from “a well-intentioned desire to love our neighbor that was not adequately defined.”

TD Jakes Embattled in More Legal Turmoil

Bishop T.D. Jakes has found himself embattled in another legal suit amid the discussions about the Sean “Diddy” Combs list, a terrifying health scare and a separate defamation suit.

Jakes had his attorney, Dustin Pusch, move to file a subpoena against Google, according to Yahoo Entertainment. The subpoena is meant to go after YouTube due to what Jakes says are AI-created lies against him on different YouTube channels.

The channels reportedly come out of Kenya, South Africa, Pakistan and the Philippines. According to Yahoo, these accounts supposedly made false voiceovers and thumbnails that produced indecent content connecting Jakes to Diddy.

According to the initial report by NBC News, the “AI elements have also been used to spread misinformation on videos that have the potential to make a large profit for both YouTube and their creators, by monetizing them with ads.”

This new legal battle comes during a time when Jakes recently filed a defamation suit against Duane Youngblood.

As Charisma News reported, Jakes filed a 20-page lawsuit against Youngblood who claimed during a Larry Reid Live interview that Jakes attempted to “groom and sexually abuse him.” Youngblood later went on the Larry Reid Live show again to do a follow-up interview about Jakes.

MorningStar on the Defensive Amid Legal Clashes

MorningStar Ministries is on the defensive amid legal battles regarding the alleged sexual abuse cases of minors by a former volunteer at the church.

In a statement to the Christian Post, MorningStar is sticking to its belief that they should not be blamed for what happened to the alleged victims.

We are aware that several young men have filed lawsuits against the ministry. While we don’t know at this point what more we could have done to have vetted Officer Lee in advance to ensure that he would not have taken advantage of these young me, we hold no malice or anger towards the young men or their parents who have chosen to file the suit.

The ministry claims that some of the alleged victims and their families continued to go to the church after they were abused by Lee.

Some of these families remained active in our church even for months after Officer Lee’s arrest, and they are always welcome at MorningStar.

Lee pleaded guilty to second and third-degree criminal sexual misconduct with a child, per the Christian Post.

This legal battle for MorningStar has become especially contentious, with Chris Reed claiming that he left the ministry largely due to this case. Continue to lift up all those caught up in this case in prayer.

Chris Reed Sheds More Light on Resignation from MorningStar

Chris Reed continues to provide further details following his resignation from MorningStar Ministries.

“I don’t even like showing communications, especially not salacious or incriminating or conversations you’re having where you’re being light-hearted just with friends, but because no one from MorningStar’s willing to speak up and to defend my tenure there, I have to show you communications that are relevant to the situation. Not just communications to trash people or to embarrass them, but communications to show you what you’re being presented with now,” Reed states.

Not disclosing the name of the person, Reed showed text communication he had with someone he claims is one of the top executives at MorningStar. This discussion took place back in January of this year.

“Chris, I do believe you are here in this place by divine direction,” the text began. “And while I know you have options you are considering, I would like to encourage you the decisions you have made and the leadership you have and are providing for MorningStar at this time is critical for this place. You have made more progress in this ministry in less than a year that is bringing this place to new horizons. The problems Ric[k] has created over the last 15 years you have cleaned up in less than a year!”

Reed says the changes he helped to implement include the work on the church’s tower, and the culture and community of the ministry. He continues to claim that the ministry is trying to shift away the focus from the legal battles they are dealing with by shifting their focus to him. He also says he has figured out who took the domain for , however, he did not disclose the identity of the person. Reed’s actual website is .

“I do know who stole the other domain. I just wanted you to see that there is two-faced stuff being said,” Reed says.

“Thank you to everyone who has been kind. I’m going to be announcing something pretty significant here in the next bit of time,” he continues.

In a recent message to MorningStar, Rick Joyner also updated the church on his current vision for MorningStar to continue moving forward. He briefly spoke about Reed’s departure.

“I’m real sorry that I created some of the mess that we went through the last few weeks. And in another way, I’m not. In another way, I am truly not because the Lord causes all things to work for good, and He showed me the good that’s going to come from all that,” Joyner says.

Continue to lift up Chris Reed, Rick Joyner and MorningStar in prayer.

In a statement, Liberty executives and Falwell said they “sincerely regret” the lengthy and difficult legal process that has followed the former president’s tumultuous exit from the university in August 2020, which came amid fallout over reports of a years-long sexual tryst that involved Falwell, his wife, Becki, and a Miami-based pool assistant named Giancarlo Granda.
