John Bevere: 3 Powerful Goals for Finishing Well and Leaving Behind a Faith Worth Following

Finishing well does not happen by accident. It is the result of daily obedience, Spirit-led priorities and a heart that remains fully surrendered to God.

On a recent episode of “The John Bevere Podcast,” John Bevere shared three goals that guide how he wants to complete the course God has given him. Each one challenges us to look beyond public accomplishments and consider the spiritual legacy we are building at home.

1. Love Jesus more

“When I leave this earth, I want to be more in love with Jesus than when I started ministry,” Bevere said.

Time in ministry does not automatically produce deeper intimacy with Christ. Bevere warned against becoming “a cynical and a jaded person who has made ministry into occupation rather than a passion.” We finish well when prayer remains personal, obedience remains joyful and our first love continues to burn.

2. Build a stronger marriage

“The day Lisa leaves this earth, I want her to be more in love with me than the day we got married,” Bevere said.

That goal influences how he treats his wife now. “How can I love my wife well? How can I nurture her well? How can I cherish her well?” he asked. A thriving marriage requires intentional love empowered by the Holy Spirit. Our spouses should experience the fruit of our walk with God, not become casualties of our work for Him.

3. Leave children a faithful example

“The day I leave this earth, I want my children to love me and be proud of me,” Bevere said. He also wants them to see that he “was faithful all the way to the end.”

Our children do not need perfection. They need a consistent example of repentance, integrity and passionate obedience to God. Bevere acknowledged his past failures and apologized to his family, demonstrating that finishing well includes correcting what we once handled poorly.

Our legacy is not formed during life’s final moments. Through the Holy Spirit, we are building it now—one prayer, one act of love and one obedient decision at a time.
