5 Keys to Living Life Filled With the Holy Spirit

Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not about reaching spiritual perfection or creating an emotional experience. It begins with surrendering to Jesus, believing His promises and making room for the Spirit to work through us.

In a recent teaching, evangelist Daniel Adams outlined five ways believers can prepare their hearts to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. “Jesus Christ is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire,” Adams said. That fire refines us, while the Spirit empowers us to minister to others and advance God’s kingdom.

1. Fill Yourself With God’s Word

Scripture builds the faith we need to receive from God. Adams pointed to Romans 10:17, which says faith comes by hearing the Word of God. “The more room God’s Word has in your heart, the less room unbelief has,” he said. Regularly reading and hearing Scripture renews our minds and replaces the world’s fear with God’s promises.

2. Believe God Without Doubting

Many believers ask to be filled while quietly questioning whether God will answer. “Faith receives; doubt resists,” Adams said. Instead of measuring God’s work by our emotions, we must trust His promise to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.

3. Surrender Every Area

The Holy Spirit is not waiting for us to become flawless. He is looking for willing, obedient vessels. “This is not about perfection,” Adams said. “He’s actually looking for yielded people.” That means surrendering our pride, control, hidden sin, anger and personal plans to Jesus.

4. Hunger and Ask

Spiritual hunger positions our hearts to receive. Adams encourages believers to pray, worship and seek God privately with expectation. “Hungry hearts are receptive hearts,” he said. We should ask for more of God because Jesus promised that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled.

5. Receive by Faith, Not Feelings

Some believers wait for goosebumps, overwhelming emotions or physical reactions before believing the Spirit is moving. But Adams said, “The kingdom operates by faith.” An encounter may be dramatic or quiet, but God’s promise remains unchanged.

Trust the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit does more than give us a memorable experience. He gives us boldness to proclaim Jesus, power to serve others and strength to live faithfully. Do not chase a feeling or compare your experience with someone else’s. Surrender to Jesus, trust His Word and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you. He is faithful, and we can confidently receive everything He desires to give.
