‘This Will Happen Again’: Expert Sounds Alarm After Catastrophic Himalayan Flood

A flood expert is sounding the alarm after a catastrophic glacial collapse unleashed a deadly wall of water, mud and debris across Nepal and Tibet: This is not necessarily a one-time disaster.

“This will happen again,” Dr. Jeff Da Costa, a meteorological hazards researcher, warned during an appearance on Fox News. “We cannot exactly say where and when, but the risk is very real.”

That sobering warning comes as rescue crews continue searching through the devastation left behind by Wednesday’s massive Himalayan disaster. The U.S. Geological Survey initially identified seismic activity in the region as an earthquake, but later analysis determined the signal came from a massive glacial collapse and debris flow.

The destruction unfolded with terrifying speed.

Footage of the catastrophe made the danger painfully clear. People could be seen running as a towering surge of debris descended upon populated areas. During his Fox News interview, Da Costa stressed just how critical those precious minutes can become during an event of this magnitude, saying information must essentially travel faster than the water.

And that may be one of the greatest warnings to emerge from this tragedy.

Da Costa pointed to the importance of forecasting and communication across international borders, particularly between nations sharing vulnerable river systems. He did not accuse China and Nepal of failing to cooperate, but emphasized that disasters do not recognize political boundaries and that information must reach those in danger while it can still save lives.

Scientists are also examining the broader instability of the Himalayan region. Reuters reported that experts say warming conditions can destabilize high-altitude ice and rock, though scientists cautioned against declaring climate change the sole immediate cause of this particular collapse.

For Christians watching scenes of entire communities devastated in minutes, this is a moment to pray for survivors, grieving families, rescue workers and those still waiting for word about missing loved ones.
