Signs in the Heavens? Blood Moon Eclipse Set to Turn the Sky Red

Florida’s night sky is about to put on a spectacular display as a massive portion of the moon turns blood red this week.

A powerful partial lunar eclipse will unfold Thursday night, Aug. 27, into the early morning hours of Friday, Aug. 28, with nearly 94% of the moon slipping into Earth’s shadow. And while it won’t technically qualify as a total lunar eclipse, the sight could certainly look close to one.

According to ClickOrlando meteorologist Jonathan Kegges, the partial eclipse will begin at 10:33 p.m. Thursday. From there, the moon will progressively darken and take on a striking reddish color as Earth’s shadow moves across its surface. The partial phase will end at 1:51 a.m. Friday.

That means anyone willing to stay up late will have the chance to see one of the most fascinating sights in the heavens: a moon that appears to turn to blood.

There is something undeniably attention-grabbing about looking into the heavens and seeing the moon turn red.

Scripture uses this exact imagery in some of its most startling prophetic passages.

“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come,” Joel 2:31 (KJV) reads.

Peter later repeated Joel’s prophecy in Acts 2:20, while Revelation 6:12 describes a moment during the opening of the sixth seal when “the moon became as blood.”

From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible makes it clear that God created the sun, moon and stars with purpose. Genesis 1:14 says the lights in the heavens would be for “signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.”

Jesus Himself also pointed His followers toward the heavens when describing the days surrounding His return.

“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars,” Jesus says in Luke 21:25.

The heavens belong to God. The moon belongs to God. And every spectacular sight above us is another reminder that the Creator who set these things into motion is still sovereign over them.

This Thursday night, Florida has a reason to look up.
