Rhode Island Church Fire Sparks Emergency Response as Smoke Fills Building

A fire at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Barrington, Rhode Island, brought emergency crews rushing to the parish Tuesday morning as smoke poured from the building.

WPRI reported from the scene that crews were responding near the parish rectory and office. Video captured by the station showed smoke coming from the structure as firefighters responded to parts of the building and worked to bring the situation under control.

Additional reporting from NBC 10 WJAR provided more details about what firefighters encountered after arriving at the Washington Road church.

According to WJAR, firefighters found smoke crawling through the church, which they traced to a fire in a rear vestibule. The church’s sprinkler system had already knocked down much of the blaze before firefighters finished extinguishing it with a hose.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

WJAR later reported that the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Office concluded that the fire was accidental. It is believed that incense ashes thrown out in a mulch bed caused the incident.
