JD Vance Makes Candid Confession About Whether He’ll Go to Heaven

Vice President JD Vance is getting candid about a question that reaches far beyond politics: Where will he spend eternity?

During a wide-ranging interview on The Bryce Crawford Podcast, Vance was asked to rate, on a scale of one to 10, how confident he is that he will go to heaven.

His answer? Not quite a 10.

“Oh man, that is a tough question,” Vance said. “It’s high, but it’s not a 10, right? I mean, it’s a seven, or it’s an eight.”

Vance’s reasoning, however, wasn’t that he believed he must somehow accumulate enough good deeds to earn his way into eternity. Instead, the vice president acknowledged something many Christians may quietly understand: Even as his faith has strengthened, questions and doubts haven’t completely disappeared.

“I’m always one of these people who is always going to have little doubts,” Vance said.

In fact, his confidence appears to be growing. Vance told Crawford that if he had been asked the same question a year earlier, his answer probably would have been a five or a six.

What changed?

Vance said that while he still occasionally wrestles with the question, “Is this actually real?” he believes he has followed what God has called him to do.

“I believe in Jesus Christ. I believe He’s my Savior,” Vance said. “I try to do the things that are, you know, sort of necessary to walk the path of faith. And I think that eventually leads to heaven.”

Still, Vance acknowledged, “I’m not 100% certain.”

Later in the conversation, Vance clarified that his uncertainty is not ultimately about whether he has performed enough good works to deserve salvation. He agreed that salvation is not about human beings earning their way into heaven, pointing instead to Christ as the One who forgives sins.

Yet Vance admitted that the lingering question for him is whether a person takes their final breath and discovers “nothing is on the other side.”

Even there, however, Vance described his faith as moving forward rather than backward.

“I feel more confident today that God exists than I have probably at any other point in my life,” he said, adding that he wants to maintain humility about what he doesn’t know.

Vance’s comments come after President Donald Trump generated headlines by publicly questioning whether he would make it to heaven.

As Charisma previously reported, Trump told reporters in October 2025, “I don’t think there’s anything going to get me in heaven,” adding that he was “maybe not heaven-bound.” Trump had previously linked his prospects of reaching heaven to accomplishing good deeds, such as helping end international conflicts.

Trump later told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that he had been “being funny” and sarcastic when making the comments, although he still acknowledged, “I don’t know if I will or not.”

People close to Trump subsequently offered their own perspectives. White House Faith Office Director Jenny Korn said Trump’s remarks reflected humility and claimed he had accepted Christ as Lord and Savior, while Eric Trump declared of his father, “Make no mistake, he is heaven-bound.”

Trump even joked at a later event that Christian author Eric Metaxas was “the guy who’s going to get me to heaven,” according to an account Metaxas shared.

Yet Vance’s comments strike a somewhat different chord. He explicitly confesses Jesus Christ as his Savior while simultaneously acknowledging the doubts he still wrestles with.

Scripture’s message of salvation does not rest upon accumulating enough accomplishments to tip eternity’s scales in our favor. Salvation rests in the finished work of what Jesus Christ did on the cross for us, atoning for every single sin. Pray for Vance that his faith would continue to grow so he can undoubtedly know without question where his eternal destination is when Jesus Christ is Lord over your life.
