California’s Earthquake Threat Rises as Scientists Warn Faults Are ‘Locked and Loaded’

Federal scientists have increased the estimated likelihood that a major earthquake will strike California’s Bay Area, adding urgency to warnings that residents must remain prepared.

The U.S. Geological Survey now calculates a 74.1% chance that at least one magnitude 6.7 or stronger earthquake will hit the region by 2055, according to the Daily Mail. That figure has risen from the agency’s previous estimate of 72%.

The increase reflects the additional time California has gone without certain fault sections rupturing, allowing tectonic stress to accumulate beneath the state.

“Things seem to be pretty locked and loaded,” USGS seismologist Ned Field told the San Francisco Chronicle. “We’d be wise to be ready.”

Among the major fault systems, Hayward-Rodgers Creek carries a 34.3% probability of producing a major earthquake. The Calaveras Fault stands at 26.8%, while the San Andreas Fault experienced the largest increase, climbing from 21.9% to 25.5%.

Geophysicist Stefan Burns also issued a more immediate warning, declaring, “California is super overdue.”

Burns said the next six to 12 months could represent a critical period as seismic activity continues across the region. “Really all of California is problematic right now,” he said.

A Biblical Call to Remain Awake

Jesus warned that earthquakes would accompany the events leading toward His return.

“Great earthquakes will be in various places, and famines and pestilences. And there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven” (Luke 21:11, MEV).

Scripture does not give us permission to set dates or declare that one particular earthquake fulfills the entirety of biblical prophecy. It does, however, command us to recognize the season and remain watchful.

As seismic activity, wars and unrest shake nations around the world, we must resist fear while refusing spiritual complacency. California residents should prepare for emergencies, but the warning reaches beyond physical readiness.

The earth may be “locked and loaded,” but the church cannot afford to be asleep.
