Mel Gibson Drops Major ‘Resurrection of the Christ’ Update

Mel Gibson is dropping more clues about what audiences can expect from “The Resurrection of the Christ”—and it sounds like this will be anything but a predictable retelling of the most earth-shattering moment in human history.

During an appearance at Fan Expo Toronto, Gibson revealed he is currently editing and completing post-production work in Canada on his highly anticipated follow-up to The Passion of the Christ, CBN’s Billy Hallowell shared in a recent discussion with Raj Nair. The massive project has been divided into two films, with Part One set to arrive in theaters May 6, 2027.

But perhaps the biggest question hanging over Gibson’s ambitious project is simple: Just how closely will it follow Scripture?

“I don’t think it’s what anyone expects, but it doesn’t deviate from the truth and the essence of the story,” Gibson said. “It’s just an imagining of it.”

That “imagining” is where things could get interesting.

On this topic, Nair pointed to Acts 1 and the 40 days Jesus spent with His followers following the resurrection. While Scripture tells us Christ gave His disciples “many convincing proofs” that He was alive and spoke about the kingdom of God, comparatively little is revealed about everything that transpired during those extraordinary days.

And Gibson has two entire films to fill.

“You’re clearly going to have to add things,” Nair said.

Gibson, however, appears determined to tackle the enormous theological weight behind Christ’s victory over death.

This isn’t simply another biblical epic. Gibson is stepping directly into the resurrection—the very heartbeat of the gospel—and audiences will undoubtedly be watching closely to see whether this cinematic creation depicts the single most important event in human history.
