King Charles Controversy Exposes the West’s Retreat From Christianity

Britain’s fading commitment to Christianity is no longer confined to empty churches. It has reached the monarchy itself.

King Charles III faces criticism after the 2026 Sovereign Grant Annual Report replaced the historic title “Defender of the Faith” with language stating that the monarch “protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation.”

Gavin Ashenden, a former chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II, accused Charles of “deserting Christians” and abandoning his oath as Defender of the Faith.

This is more than a dispute over royal wording. It reveals how Christianity is being reduced throughout Great Britain and across the Western world. The faith that once shaped nations, institutions and laws is increasingly treated as one interchangeable belief among many.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News Digital that the new language has “caused considerable controversy.” He argued that “Defender of the Faith” should have remained in the report alongside language acknowledging Britain’s multi-faith population.

“Whoever wrote ‘protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation’ is no credit to the English language as this phrase is both weak and woke,” Fitzwilliams said.

From Christian Conviction to Generic Faith

Queen Elizabeth II respected other religions without concealing her devotion to Jesus Christ.

“She never wavered when it came to her Christian beliefs,” royal biographer Christopher Andersen said.

King Charles has taken a different approach. According to Andersen, the monarch has long believed that “no one religion has all the answers.” Concerns are now growing that Prince William may ultimately abandon the Defender of the Faith role altogether.

The controversy should matter to American Christians because the same spiritual decline is unfolding across the West. Christianity is first softened into generic “faith.” Its historic influence is then treated as embarrassing. Eventually, the institutions created through Christian conviction remain, but the biblical foundation beneath them disappears.

Religious freedom does not require a nation to erase its Christian heritage. Queen Elizabeth showed that a monarch can respect other faiths while remaining firmly committed to Christ.

When leaders stop defending the faith, Christian institutions soon forget why they exist.

We must pray for England, but we must also pray for the entire Western world. The society built upon faith is slowly abandoning the very thing that made it great. Only spiritual awakening and a return to God can reverse that retreat.
