Lazarus Experience Propels Ukrainian Evangelist to Help Set Others on Fire for Jesus

Early in his childhood, Andrey Shapoval knew he had a strong calling of God on his life. His mother, with whom he immigrated to the United States from the Ukraine, had a visitation from angels that told her of the special person she carried inside her and the great things he would do for the kingdom of God.

The prophetic dream came to fruition, and now the pastor and evangelist is spreading the gospel worldwide and helping people to get saved who normally might never hear God’s Word or might simply ignore it. Shapoval is the founder and leader of Flame of Fire Ministry in Sacramento, California, the same city where my good friend, Samuel Rodriguez, is based.

Rodriguez knows Shapoval well, and he knows what Shapoval is doing not only to light a Holy Spirit blaze under the Slavic community, but also around the world. Shapoval has preached in 35 countries around the globe, including Pakistan, Ethiopia and the Philippines.

“The Slavic community is on fire for Jesus,” Rodriguez says in a quote on Shapoval’s website. “Andrey Shapoval is a powerful voice leading this awakening. At the end of the day, this I know for certain; nothing can stop the Holy Spirit from moving and nothing can stop the gospel of Jesus.”

In his mother’s womb, Shapoval says, angels spoke a strong message to her about her son. He strayed from the Lord for a while, but when he came back, he did so completely on fire.

“When my mom was pregnant, the angels of God came to my mom and said, ‘You are carrying a son, and you’re going to name him Andrey,'” Shapoval told me on a recent episode of the Strang Report. “So from my childhood, my mom was always telling me, ‘Andrey, you need to be close with God; He has something for your life.’

“To be honest, I ended up far away from the Lord by age 22, and I lost everything in my life,” he says. “God was probably tired of that, and on April 1, 2002, on an Easter Day, the power of God came upon me. The way God spoke to me, He told me to come out of the grave. One of the evangelists who had come from Africa was preaching about Lazarus, that he was dead for four days. I suddenly saw myself as dead like Lazarus and something inside of me screamed, ‘God, if You can do something, just help me.’

“I then heard a voice: ‘Son, I command you to come out,'” Shapoval adds. “That day, I was lying on the floor for hours crying to God, and I made a decision on my life. I told Him that He could have my whole life, whatever it takes: ‘I want to know who You are, and that’s going to be my purpose in life.’ Since that day, I’ve been seeking the Lord like crazy; I was dwelling in the Word, day and night and praying in tongues eight hours a day.”

And that, Shapoval says, is what it takes for believers to live beyond simply a normal Christian life and to live a powerful one. That is one of the strongest messages he believes he can preach.

“I believe there is such a difference between serving God and pleasing God,” Shapoval says. God is calling us to be here. He said to present your bodies as a living sacrifice and renew your mind. We need to be so sold out to God Himself because He is separating Himself in this hour. He’s going to do tremendous things in these last days. We really need to focus on God right now. We need to walk under His lordship and to surrender to Him and to seek His face to our last breath.”

An Ambitious Plan to Pray From the Heart of America

After a global pandemic that has lasted 15 months, Christians will travel to the exact center of the nation in mid-July from eight directions to pray for the nation in the middle of a cornfield. The “Prayer at the Heart of America” event will be held in the tiny town of Lebanon, Kansas—population 218—after caravans of intercessors arrive from eight points on the compass.

“We believe this gathering in the heart of our nation is a vital part of a fresh awakening that God so desires to bring to America,” says Garry Bryant, a leader in the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, one of several denominations and parachurch ministries helping to organize the unusual event.

Intercessors will arrive in the Kansas town on July 23 from Augusta, Maine; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Miami, Florida; Donna, Texas; San Diego and San Francisco, California; Seattle, Washington; and Grand Forks, North Dakota. Another group of intercessors on motorcycles will ride the circumference of the nation, starting from Tacoma, Washington, and then head to Lebanon.

The tiny Kansas town is the geographic center of the continental United States. Hundreds of Christians will arrive there after praying in cities and small towns along their routes. All the prayer warriors will then converge in Lebanon for a six-hour prayer meeting.

The gathering was first envisioned by Doug Small, an author and prayer leader affiliated with the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee). Author of Prayer: Heartbeat of the Church and Transforming Your Church into a House of Prayer, Small said he has dreamed of seeing caravans of Christians rededicating the nation back to God.

Says Small: “Right in the middle of the nation, in the middle of a cornfield, is a monument that marks the geographic center of the continental USA. I’ve dreamed of people gathering there, carrying a torch like a marathon.” Small says participants will avoid major interstates and instead “go through every little town and hamlet” as they travel to the center of the nation, stopping along the way to pray in various venues.

Christians from about 70 denominations have been enlisted in the effort, along with representatives from the National Prayer Committee, Transform USA, Pilgrim’s Covenant, the Children’s International Prayer Commission and other prayer movements, Small said.

The event will be broadcast live on social media, but various denominations and church networks are encouraging Christians to attend in person. Participants will stay in hotels or RV parks in a 120-mile radius of Lebanon, in cities including Salina, Hays and Beloit. Information about the meeting location and lodging can be found at .

So why would hundreds of Christians want to go to such an expense to travel so far to pray in such a remote location?

“Without question, our nation has turned its back on its Judeo-Christian heritage and foundation,” says the IPHC’s Bryant. “The truth of God’s Word is being ignored and rejected. Our sin has increased, and the moral fiber of our nation has been defiled. Prayer at the Heart is a call to the family of faith, and the invitation is extended to everyone who believes that God is able to heal our land and that He is our hope for revival and restoration.”

“If we want revival in America, we have to press in for it,” says Denise Gedda, a prayer leader based near Kansas City who will host intercessors coming from the Virginia prayer route. “It’s time we showed God we are serious. We have to be desperate. I think at this point there is power when people lay down the things that occupy their time. We are saying, ‘Lord, we need You.’ We are taking a journey, praying in one accord and crying out to God.”

Terry Kesling, pastor of Christian Life Worship Center in Athens, Georgia, says he and his wife will join a caravan of intercessors who will drive from Virginia Beach, Virginia, to Kansas. During the six-day drive they will stop to pray in the nation’s capital as well as other significant spots including Williamsburg, Virginia.

Participants believe God will hear the cries of those who are desperate for spiritual awakening. Says Kesling: “I have sensed that this coming revival will consist of small fires starting in many places. It will not be just one big revival in one place.”

The event will run from 2 to 8 p.m. CST on July 23, but those driving in caravans will leave several days earlier to pray along their routes. You can go to for information on how to join a prayer caravan. {eoa}

Are You Ready to Possess Your Promised Land?

The book of Numbers is so important to study! It all boils down to this: Numbers are in order; our God is a God of order. He is always in the details. We cannot even fathom with our understanding how much God is in the details.

God is the highest-level visionary, the ultimate Creator, architect and master craftsman. He has the blueprints for everything. Remember, the Bible says in Luke 12:7, “Indeed, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear. You are more valuable than many sparrows.”

No matter how far we stray, He can always bring things back into balance and order. But we have to do our part. God asks us for accountability and to be a good steward of that with which He blesses us. The book of Numbers teaches us these important lessons. You will find that order, responsibility, leadership, delegation, authority, significance and blessings are all common themes.

This book takes us on a journey through the desert with the Israelites. Do you feel like you are stuck in the wilderness, awaiting your promised land? It is time to put things in order. God is asking for your obedience and willingness to follow Him. This is how you will possess the land. This is a new era for you. Are you ready to possess your promised land?

I Wish This Person Would Come to Church

Who is that for you? A friend? A family member?

We all have someone, but let me ask you this: Why is it really easy to talk with strangers about the Netflix show you binged, but you can’t talk to close friends about the church that has changed your life?

Can I tell you a secret? Even though I’m a pastor, I feel the same way.

I can ramble on about Cobra Kai or Stranger Things, but talking about spiritual matters can make me feel like I’m 16 again, asking a girl out on a date: sweaty hands, dry mouth and tongue-tied.

But, I’ve learned a few things that have helped.

Here are 5 things to help when you’ve got someone you want to come to church, but you are scared to invite them.

5 Things to Help When You Want to Invite Someone to Church

1. Begin with prayer.

I don’t mean pray as you are walking up to ask them to come to Easter service. I mean pray for that person every single day. Pray for their health; pray for their job; pray for their marriage; and eventually, you’ll wonder how you can pray with even more specificity for them.

This will lead to a great conversation of “Hey, anything I can be praying about for you?” I find that people are very open to this. Then do it; pray for them, and ask them how it’s going in a few weeks.

2. Listen to them.

When they talk, don’t just wait to speak. Listen. When they post, don’t just react. Listen.

Why are they saying this? What is going on in their life? What might God be up to that you can join Him in.

3. Eat with them.

Invite them to dinner before you ever invite them to church. Listen to them. Find out about their lives. Don’t see them as a project, but as a person. They have hopes and dreams. They have hurts and hang ups. They want their kids to be safe and successful. Just like you.

Find commonality in that before you ask about their soul.

4. Serve them.

Now that you know them, find a way to serve them. It might be taking them dinner. It might be helping them get trash out to the corner or their dumpsters back to the house. It might be dropping donuts off at their door.

Just be the kind of neighbor you’d like to have.

5. Share your story.

When a big event at your church comes up, or when they ask about your weekend plans, or when they might even ask why you are so kind, share your story about church. Not what they should think, believe or do. Instead, share how church has helped you, how this service is always fun for your family or how following Jesus has changed your life.

No one can argue with your story, so share it.

These five things spell out the acronym ., and they are all part of a conversation I had recently with the author of the . book, Dave Ferguson. You can listen to that conversation here.

Notice that in that whole list, we haven’t even mentioned inviting that person to church. But when you do, remember these things:

Most people don’t even know a Christian, so be a kind one.

Most people don’t know where to go to church, what to wear, if they need to pass an entrance exam … So invite them to watch online first. Share a recent service with them, and ask them what they thought about it.

Most people are just waiting for an invitation, so just ask! And if they don’t come, no worries. One day they will, and they’ll thank you for being so patient with them.

Who is that person you want to invite?

Start “” them today.{eoa}

Jews for Jesus Fights Back Against Today’s Cancel Culture

Antisemitism has reared its ugly head for centuries. Jewish people worldwide have been targeted and have been victims of this toxic persecution for longer than any care to remember.

But the cancel culture, about which I have written a new book, God and Cancel Culture , which releases Sept. 7, is a cancer that has stricken America only recently, perhaps over the last year and a half. While it may seem like the same form of persecution, cancel culture is a fairly new term.

My good friend, Susan Perlman, one of the co-founders of the Jews for Jesus who serves on the executive team of the organization, says even many Jews have become a part of it.

Because Jews for Jesus is a Messianic organization that tries to raise the awareness of Jesus as the Jewish Messiah, many in the Jewish community have either ignored this group or spoken out against it.

“It’s not the whole Jewish community, and we’ve always found a certain number of fair-minded Jews that are willing to consider the fact that we are legitimately Jewish,” Perlman says on a recent episode of the Strang Report podcast. “But oftentimes, there will be those within the Jewish leadership who will say, ‘You can be for Jesus; that’s your right, but don’t continue to call yourselves Jews.’ So they want to cancel out the Jewish part of our name. They say, ‘You can call yourself “Former Jews for Jesus,” but you are not really Jews anymore.’

“That’s one way cancel culture has hit us, and we’ve just basically refused to accept that depiction of who we are,” Perlman says. “We say, ‘If you want to call us bad Jews, call us bad Jews. Say that we’re misinformed, if that’s your opinion. But we are Jews; our parents are Jewish. We grew up as part of a people that God made a covenant with. We’ve never had God tell us that we’re no longer Jewish.’

“So, with that part of cancel culture, we’ve just been ornery about it,” she adds. “No. 1, we won’t accept that. No. 2, I think it’s important as believers for us to grasp the whole import of cancel culture and what repercussions that has on us sharing our faith and being strong believers. In this culture today, people just shrink away from saying things because they don’t want to be canceled out. They don’t want others to say, ‘We’re just writing you off; you have nothing to say that will be of interest to us.‘ Back in the first century, the apostle Paul would have been canceled out if cancel culture were big then. But I don’t think he would have stopped doing anything he did.”

Perlman points out that a recent survey came out from the Pew Research group on the Jewish population in the U.S., and the survey included Jews who are Jews by religion and Jews who are Jews with no religion, including atheists and agnostics. However, Pew made it very clear, Perlman said, that Jews who believe in Jesus would not be included in this Jewish study.

That’s yet another perfect example of the cancel culture.

“Yes, we were canceled by Pew for whatever reasons,” Perlman says. “But God hasn’t canceled us out and hasn’t canceled you out. Speak your voice and stand up for what God has given you to say.”

Prophecy: Expect a New Birth and Mega Blessings

Watch God shower His bountiful blessings on you and learn how His overwhelming favor shines through every facet of life! Expect finances and ministries to boom as His glory and fire spread contagiously in this season!

Explosive New Birth

God is a God of times and seasons, so to better understand what is taking place, we have to look into God’s timeline to see what He has done historically. Right now, we are in the Hebraic month of Sivan, which is known as a month of birthing! Just like the church was born at Pentecost in uncontrollable power, watch as God births something new through you!

He is birthing dreams, visions and prophetic words which will catapult you into your destiny, which has been promised to you since the beginning of time!

Wrestling for the New Name

Jewish scholars relate the month of Sivan with Jacob, one of the fathers of the faith. Looking into Genesis 32:24 -32, we can see the story of Jacob’s wrestling match with an angel. All night they continued their struggle to no avail. When the angel saw that day was breaking, he put Jacob’s hip out of joint and told him to let go.

Even though Jacob was in pain, he told the angel he wouldn’t give up without a blessing. It was only when the angel saw the man’s relentless tenacity that he finally decided to bless him, and he changed Jacob’s name to Israel. This ultimately altered Jacobs’ whole identity and his entire future.

Maturity Through Hardship

Yes, you’ve fought hard and won, but it has also left you changed. Just like Jacob’s hip, you’ve been left marked. If you want the new name, you must endure persecution and pain. Would you be able to trust a leader who hasn’t experienced hardship?

Be encouraged because God is maturing you and preparing you through the Pentecost power and glory so that you will glide through your upcoming battles. You will pass every test and win every wrestling match with every contender!

Mega Blessings

The anointing of God is coming over you and empowering you to be just like Jacob! You have been transformed and crowned with a new identity for such a time as this! You have been totally transformed and given a new name!

God is calling you out from everyone around you and rewarding you for a job well done. Expect a boom, new birth and mega blessings as you move to achieve what the world told you would be impossible. You have endured your tests and trials; now claim your reward! {eoa}

Modern-Day Apostle: ‘Make the Great Commission the Great Completion’

I can’t get his response out of my head.

That low, familiar tone. His brokenness for the lost. The hint of trembling in his voice as he responded to the question.

In a recent Podcast episode on Charisma Podcast Network, Joshua sat across the table from his 82-year-old mentor and founder of AIMS Ministry, seeking to draw from the deep wells of wisdom rumbling within him.

With genuine admiration for the man who can’t stop talking about ways to finish the Great Commission and whose passion for unreached people groups has resulted in roughly 3 million salvations in the nations, Joshua posed this simple question:

“What were some of the sacrifices you had to make?”

The perspective Dr. Howard Foltz offered with his answer was profound. It summons the listener into a stronger sense of gratitude for the privilege of being included in God’s mission to reach nations. To hear his response, listen here.

Proverbs 20:5 says, “Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.” During the exchange between Joshua and Howard, one thing is crystal clear: difference-makers must intentionally pursue the wisdom of those who have come before us.

“When we couple a generation who has vision, passion and energy,” Joshua remarks, “with a generation who has wisdom, foundation and has been tempered through their experiences—the two generations brought together are an unstoppable kingdom force!”

Joshua first met his mentor during an training. Dr. Foltz urged attendees to make the Great Commission “the Great Completion” by raising up native missionaries among the 3 billion people living in the 10/40 window who still have no access to the gospel. Joshua wept through the conference, knowing that both the information and the man sharing it were going to be instrumental in his life.

Just months earlier, Joshua—a missionary to northern Iraq—dreamt that he was driving frantically down an access road. But there was a big problem! He was driving in reverse! Suddenly, a tall, slender, white-haired man appeared, emphatically waving him off the highway. As Joshua slowed his car, the man lovingly instructed him, saying, “You’re heading toward the right destination. But you’re getting there the wrong way.” He directed Joshua to turn the car around, get on the highway and continue toward the destination, no longer in reverse.

Joshua knew exactly what the dream meant. He was on the right path of serving God in missions, but there was a more strategic way: raise up the indigenous missionaries.

Get ready to be profoundly impacted by the insight and humility that pours forth from Dr. Foltz. In this episode, you’ll glean practical advice and a longing for God to work through your life in new ways.

How You Can Know God Hears From Heaven

King Solomon prayed for you and me! I find this to be so astounding. At the dedication of the temple, he lifted his hands to heaven and first interceded on behalf of the people of Israel who would come there to pray and asked God to hear their prayers. He then prayed for the foreigners—non Israelites—who would also come there to pray to the God of Israel.

The temple was to be the place on earth where the presence of God dwelt. But Solomon knew that if even the heavens could not contain God, how much less this temple he had built! Nevertheless, he asked the Lord to hear the prayers His people would pray from there: “And listen to the pleas of Your servant and Your people Israel when they pray toward this place. And may You respond from heaven, the place of Your dwelling, so that You hear and forgive” (2 Chron. 6:21).

Solomon also knew God intended to make the people of Israel a light to the nations, and one day, Gentiles would be drawn to worship the God of Israel and pray to Him at the temple. So Solomon prayed that the Lord would hear their prayer as well and answer from heaven.

Once Solomon finished his prayer, the glory of the Lord so filled the temple that the priests could not enter it to minister. God had accepted Solomon’s prayer, and His presence had sealed the deal!

Today there is no longer a temple in Jerusalem, but the God who is so great that even the heavens cannot contain Him still hears our prayers—the prayers of the foreigner to the God of Israel. So don’t be shy, and in your time of need, pray to the God who hears and answers from heaven!

Evangelist Says God Can Show You the Deepest Needs of Hurting People

Evangelist Rick Bonfim has been in ministry since the age of 14, but in his profound new book, Praying with Accuracy, he says it took him a number of years with fasting “several days a month, waiting on God, and asking Him for wisdom” to learn how to pray powerfully and effectively for hurting people.

This search to discern the essential deep needs of people who come to him for prayer began with a ministry trip to Mississippi. The event is described in the preface of Praying with Accuracy. I think many of us can, at some point, identify with Bonfim’s vulnerable admission shared in his book’s opening.

He says he preached on Lazarus at a church and then invited people to come to the altar for prayer if they felt far from God. “The response was overwhelming when over 90% of those attending came forward.” Bonfim wrote that “as they knelt at the chancel rail, I saw so many faces. Before me were faces filled with fear, faces trying to hide anger, faces with sadness, and faces revealing trauma and hurt.”

The problem was that Bonfim did not know how to get beneath the surface of what he was seeing. He did not know what to pray or how to find the root need beneath the symptoms so easy to see. Bonfim says, “The Spirit of God had been convicting a whole congregation, and I … felt completely out of the process.” He felt like a bystander rather than like a follower of Jesus released in power and authority to heal these people.

I think many Christians who hunger to miraculously help others in physical and inner healing can identify with this helplessness and uncertainty about what to say and do. Certainly, the disciples in the Bible also reveal to us that confusion and ineptness can be part of the growing experience to becoming adept in ministering in power and with the authority freely granted by Jesus.

Bonfim’s book, Praying with Accuracy, provides hope and direction. How can we gain faith, certainty and know-how in our desire to participate in the healing ministry of Christ today? Bonfim’s book and ministry have been full of guidance and encouragement for Christians “running after” all that Jesus has for us to experience as his followers and apprentices.

You can learn to get to the deepest issue in the life of someone who comes to you for prayer and help. Bonfim says in this book, “… you must get to the very essence—the core need that is the single most influential factor affecting the life of the individual before you. Getting to the heart of the need will require the leading of the Holy Spirit and the proper use of Scripture.”

But the good news is that Jesus can teach us!

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye on you” (Ps. 32:8).

Why Church Outreaches Often Fail

“And if I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men to Myself” (John 12:32).

There’s no doubt that people are falling away and leaving churches. I believe that is a sign that we are living in the last of the last days. I also believe pastors are panicking to try to bring in people or retain people. You can’t browse a bookstore without seeing multiple books about how to grow your church or retain attendees.

But there is one big problem with all of this. We can’t grow churches by methods. Only the Holy Spirit can effectively grow the universal church. When leaders begin to focus on growing numbers in their congregations instead of growing numbers for the kingdom, they soon start to resort to secular outreaches and end up disappointed.

Over the past several years, I’ve been a part of many different outreaches.

We’ve had back-to-school bashes and given away backpacks full of school supplies while entertaining the kids with carnival activities. It was a kind way of loving the community. Some families visited the church later, but most took the free stuff and were never seen again until the next year.

Many outreaches are done in love with the underlying intent of drawing people into the church. In one of our former outreaches, we had at least 100 people show up for the fun and free stuff. Only two or three visited the church afterward, and none of them made our church their church home.

So why do outreaches often fail? And why do most churches buy into the idea that giving away things and throwing fun carnival events draw people into the church?
