What Recognizing Stroke Symptoms Did for This Woman’s Faith

On Thursday, August 11, 2016, I experienced stroke symptoms.

I had awakened from a nap to find the left side of my face, hand, and foot numb. I had difficulty moving my hand and walking.

I knew I was in trouble. The first thing I did was pray, seeking the Lord as to what to do. I solicited prayers from the prayer warriors at my church. And based upon godly counsel, I sought medical attention.

My blood pressure was sky high. Many of you know that my grandmother died of a stroke at the age of 47 and I am not too many years beyond that age.

Praise God, my blood pressure was brought down with medication. Now, here is where the story gets really interesting.

I had a brain CT scan, and no evidence of a recent stroke was seen. However, there was evidence of an “old” stroke on the scan. I have never had any stroke before of which I’m aware.

My personal belief is that the “old” stroke was not old at all, but the new event that God healed. The doctor could not find anything new in my brain. The prayers of the righteous do avail much!

At this juncture, I still have some numbness in my fingers and toes on the left, but it is getting better every day.

God is still in the healing business. I am learning something else through this experience:

This situation came to pass, but God’s Word comes to last!

Now, some of you may wonder: “She is always talking about health—eating right and exercising. And yet, this affliction still happened to her. What is the point?”

Well, the Lord did not promise that we would have a trouble-free life—even as Christians. Such are the effects of living in our fallen world:

“I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But be of good cheer. I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

With that being said, I must take responsibility for my part. In my ignorance, I did not take my blood pressure medication the way I should have. I said to myself, “The Lord will heal me.”

Well, the Lord never told me to stop my medication! I am just being transparent here.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He swill direct your paths.”

Failing to take my medication properly was me leaning upon my own understanding, not following God’s direction. It was presumptuous and I would never advise someone else to do that.

Hear this: Taking medication does not mean that you lack faith in God’s ability to heal!

Please do not make the same mistake I did. Seek the Lord first for every decision. You will know it is the Lord speaking to you when you have peace in your inner man. If there is doubt, anxiety and confusion, keep seeking Him.

Absent a specific word from God in your situation, be obedient to the wisdom that He has given to you already. He speaks through His Word, personal revelation, which agrees with His Word, and godly counsel, which also agrees with His Word:

“Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Prov. 11:14)

I eat healthy and exercise because God made known to man that these actions support our health.

I believe my affliction would have been much worse, perhaps even fatal, if I had not been doing what I know to do in the eating and exercise arena already. I thank God for His mercy!

During this experience, I recalled one of Jesus’ temptations in His wilderness experience (Matt. 4:1-11). I thought about how Satan tried to tempt Jesus to throw Himself off the pinnacle of the temple to prove who He was and what God can do.

He even twisted a Scripture to try to convince Jesus to kill himself!

However, Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'”

This Scripture refers to an incident in Exodus 17:1-7. The people wanted water in the wilderness and asked for it, however they did so in a manipulative way.

They asked, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

The implication was that if the Lord did not do what they wanted Him to do or act in the time frame that they wanted, then that must mean the Lord was not with them.

But God had already said Exodus 6:7: “I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.”

Whether in the wilderness or in the Promised Land, in affliction or in wellness, we must be convinced of one thing:

The Lord is with us.

Outward circumstances should never convince us otherwise, nor should we attempt to try to manipulate God to change our outward circumstances as proof that He is who He says He is or that His word is true.

Tempting God goes along the lines of, “If you are God, then you would … “

If that is the case, then we fall right into the snares of the enemy! Rather, our game plan should be from Philippians 4:6-7: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with gratitude, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will protect your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Do not move unless God tells you to—either through His Word, through personal revelation or through godly counselors.

I am still believing the Lord for complete restoration of feeling in my left fingertips and toes. In the meantime, I will continue to do what is known: taking my medication properly, monitoring my blood pressure, as well as continuing to eat properly and exercise.

I have experienced its benefits, both in my daily ability to enjoy life and in prevention. That is the point.

I am doing my part and letting God be God in the rest! {eoa}

Why Many Millennials Are Starving for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Children and youth are the largest generation around the world. There are over 80 million millennials in the United States, which is 34 million more than my generation called X, and is 4 million more people than the Baby Boomers.

Millennials are spiritually hungry and readily accept the supernatural. They want something more than what they are getting from pop culture. They are bombarded with things to buy and do, but they want to keep their personal identities while desiring for authenticity.

Relevance seemed to be a key term several years ago, but now the youth are not asking for relevance but instead want to be part of an authentic community based on reality which addresses and applies positive change to every aspect of life. As the church. we can provide their answers for life and provide authentic fellowship. They will commit to be part of the community before they come to Christ and when His power is on display they will wholeheartedly commit to Him and bring their friends.

The power of God needs to be displayed in all ministries, places of work and homes. As a youth pastor, I saw many teenagers receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit. Once, while out for coffee with a group of teenagers, one asked me about the Holy Spirit. Once we got back into the church van, I sensed the Spirit of God wanting to move. I led the teen in a simple prayer and she started to beautifully speak in tongues as we traveled back to drop everyone off.

These occurrences took place often. I had a group of student interns in my vehicle returning from an outreach. While worship music played, one student in the back asked about the topic of speaking in tongues. While driving, I explained it to her using Scripture and led her in prayer to receive this spiritual gift.

Right then, the student in the passenger seat was filled with the Spirit, and it prompted other students to ask about it. The young lady who asked didn’t receive at that moment, but testified within the week that she was deep in prayer and filled with the Holy Spirit while vacuuming.

God enjoys giving spiritual gifts, even on holidays and birthdays. One time I was in my church office and received an urgent phone call. A woman in our church told me about her nephew, who was in crisis due to drugs. She asked me to drop everything and intervene. I arrived at the home and shared the gospel with her nephew, who accepted Jesus and became instantly sober. Worship music played and I discussed the Spirit baptism from Acts 2:1-4, and the woman from my church said she wanted that to take place in her life. I led her in a simple prayer, asking for the Spirit to fill her up, and she gloriously received it on her birthday!

A year ago, after preaching on salvation and seeing over 100 young people give their lives to Jesus, I gave a testimony and instruction on the Spirit baptism and its purpose to make us more effective witnesses for Jesus. Our team moved around, praying for healing and the kids to receive the baptism. We had testimonies of knee problems and migraines healed as we watched the Spirit of God empower these young students.

With previous generations, I witnessed that people would walk away and leave when someone began to about God’s power. But due to the spiritual hunger of this present generation, I’ve seen that they they want to experience truth. Power must be evident through preaching the Word in order to reach this emerging generation. His promise for the Spirit is for all generations (Acts 2:38-39) and it is for you.

If you have not yet received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, set aside time to worship God and ask Jesus to fill you. Praise Him, knowing that when you ask, you will receive (Luke 11:13). When a language you don’t know comes to your mind, start speaking it out loud, loud enough for you to hear and as you give Him thanks.

Then, pray in this gift daily and know it has empowered you to tell others about Him. Also, find several millennials and invest your time with them and share what the incredible Spirit of God has done in your life, pointing them to the Scripture but also taking time to pray with them to receive this great gift.

Mentor them to help them apply the Bible to their life and to walk in the power of God. The promise is to you, to your children and all generations. {eoa}

10 Smart Ways to a Healthy Fast

Many people think about fasting for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you need to renew your body and soul. Maybe you’re feeling sluggish or toxic and need to cleanse your body in short order. Or maybe you want to fast for spiritual reasons, such as a breakthrough in your personal life or for revival in this land.

Whatever your reasons for fasting, here are 10 tips to ensure you fast smart:

1. Prepare your mind. Before you begin, think about why you want to fast. What do you want to achieve? It’s important to have the right mindset before you start or you may lose heart early on. Pray for discipline and a strong will to complete the fast.

2. Stock up. Shop for everything you’ll need before the day you begin. Not having everything you need on your first day is a sure way to fail. If you’re doing a juice fast, for example, look at the recipes you’ll be using, and make sure your shopping list has all the ingredients.

3. Drink water. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of purified water while you are fasting so you can flush away toxins and waste. This will also help you stay energized. Dehydration can cause you to feel tired and hungry.

4. Go easy. Gentle exercise, such as walking, is good, but don’t overexert yourself. Your body is working hard to eliminate toxins, remove damaged cells and restore vitality. This important work is often not completed when we eat regular meals. That’s because the body focuses its attention on digestion throughout the day. Fasting frees your body from this daily chore so it can work on cleansing, repairing and healing. It’s like taking a week’s vacation to thoroughly clean your home.

While all this important work is going on inside, you want to give your body the rest it needs. Take more breaks. Avoid exhausting work. Go for walks. Get fresh air and sun. Go to bed early, as powerful healing hormones are released while you sleep. Relax before bed by taking a bath, reading a good book or listening to beautiful music.

5. Choose a plan. Many people think fasting means a strict water fast. Some people even try to follow the model of some biblical heroes—no food or water, which can be dangerous. But there is more than one type of fast. Choose the one that is best for you.

  • Water fast. A strict water fast for more than two or three days is not recommended unless you can completely rest and are medically supervised.
  • Juice fast. Freshly made juice is rich in antioxidants that bind toxins so they don’t damage cells—and those antioxidants are critical, especially during a fast.
  • Daniel fast. As described in Daniel 10:3, the prophet abstained for three weeks from delicacies, meat and wine, which would include all animal products and alcohol. This is a vegan diet, in other words, and includes abstaining from rich foods and desserts.
  • One meal a day. Everyone can fast for one meal or from certain foods. You can deny yourself coffee, sweets, soda pop, fast food, snack foods and junk food. None of these things are good for your body anyway. And if you can’t do a strict fast because of your age or health, choose instead to give up some of your favorite foods. You could also fast one meal a day and drink a veggie juice instead.

Unlike in biblical times, where the air, soil and water were virtually pure, we have thousands of different chemicals pouring into our atmosphere every year. Most of our food is sprayed with pesticides and packaged with preservatives, additives, dyes and fillers. (Therefore, you ought to choose organic produce.) Our water is treated with chemicals, and our air is assaulted with industrial pollution.

Toxins are stored mainly in our fat cells. When we fast, those toxins are released in greater amounts. Without antioxidants to bind up free radicals, our cells can be damaged.

On the juice fast, you can drink vegetable juices, purified water, coconut water, veggie broth and herbal teas throughout the day. I emphasize vegetable juice because fruit juice has too much sugar, which can cause spikes and dips in blood sugar, leaving you tired. However, you can use a little fruit to flavor and sweeten veggie juice recipes.

All this will keep you healthy, energized and hydrated. To keep from boredom, try new juice and green smoothie recipes, such as those in my book The Juice Lady’s Big Book of Juices and Green Smoothies.

6. Be wise. You may have a physical condition that would make water or juice fasting unwise or dangerous. Seek medical advice first. However, be aware that many doctors have little knowledge of fasting or training in nutrition. People who should not do a strict water or juice fast include women who are pregnant or nursing, people who are anorexic or bulimic, anyone who is emaciated or underweight, and those who are on dialysis.

Be aware of medications and their effects while you fast. For example, a vegetable juice fast can lower your blood pressure quickly, so you would need to cut back on medication, for which you should seek your physician’s advice. People with diabetes or hypoglycemia can modify a vegetable juice fast and include green smoothies made with avocado for extra protein and fat. This would also be my recommendation for anyone who is elderly or weak.

During your fast, if you become so hungry you could eat the plaster off your wall, you may have parasites or yeast overgrowth. It could be that freeloaders in your body are screaming for food. You may need to do a parasite cleanse or a yeast-control diet to get this infection under control before continuing any other kind of fast.

Please note: Children under the age of 15 should not do a strict water or juice fast.

7. Determine the length. You can fast from one day to an extended period of time, like Jesus did for 40 days. Most people can easily handle a three-day fast. If you work, start on Friday. Then you’ll have the weekend to complete the fast at home.

8. Know the symptoms. As your body releases toxins, you might get some detox reactions, such as headaches, tiredness, foggy brain or bad breath. (Chew parsley for your breath.) This can be part of your body ridding itself of toxins that could cause disease, which is a good thing. Don’t quit your fast when this happens. The symptoms should pass rather quickly.

9. Pray. Fasting and prayer are linked throughout the Bible. Whenever we fast, we are admonished to pray, which facilitates our spiritual growth and renewal.

10. Break smart. How you break a fast is as important as the fast itself. Break your fast the first day with only vegetable juices, green smoothies, raw fruits and vegetables, veggie soups, dehydrated vegan foods or steamed vegetables. Never break a fast with a heavy meal like a burger and fries or steak and potatoes, as you can harm your body and end up with stomach cramps and digestive issues.

Bonus: Know the Benefits

The ancient discipline of fasting offers health benefits no other therapy can provide. On the physical side, it rapidly rids the body of waste and toxins—like changing old water in an aquarium. It can eliminate edema and lower blood pressure. A study published by the Journal of Alternative Complementary Medicine in 2002 found that 90 percent of 174 patients with high blood pressure who incorporated fasting achieved normal blood pressure. Each of the participants who had been on antihypertensive medications were able to get off their drugs.

Fasting also helps rebalance your body’s pH level. The typical American diet is mostly acid forming. A slightly acidic body contributes to weight gain, cancer and a host of other diseases. Fasting facilitates weight loss—water weight first, then fat. This ancient practice appears to reset the metabolism, much like a computer reboot.

A fast also gives your digestive tract a rest. This helps your digestive system heal, which can lead to significant health improvements. Allergy symptoms often improve with fasting. Autoimmune disorders may heal. Fasting improves insulin sensitivity by lowering blood sugar, which helps diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

In addition, fasting is part of our spiritual heritage. It was an expected discipline in both the Old and New Testament. The Orthodox Church still has four main fast periods during the calendar year.

However, fasting is one of the most neglected spiritual disciplines of the 21st century. It is rarely discussed in most non-liturgical churches or on Christian TV. Yet Scripture admonishes us to fast and pray.

According to Scripture, when God’s people fast with the right motive, seeking Him with a broken, repentant and contrite spirit, God hears from heaven (2 Chron. 7:14). He promised He will heal our lives, our churches, our communities and our nation.

Our land is in desperate need of healing. Repentance, fasting and prayer are the only hope for our nation. Fasting and prayer can bring revival and a change of direction in our country. It can also rekindle our love for Christ. Fasting is a powerful spiritual tool to make a difference in our lives.

Do You Bear Witness to Kenneth Hagin’s 1963 Prophecy About America?

Kenneth E. Hagin has gone home to be with the Lord—but his teaching ministry and the prophetic words he released when he walked the Earth are still blessing the masses.

Amid the doom and gloom prophets who leave no room for God’s mercy in their judgmental utterances, I was blessed to come across this 1963 prophecy Hagin released about the future of America.

It may surprise you that he saw atheistic communism sweeping across the nation long before the strong rise of the atheist agenda. It may surprise you to see he saw racial hatred rising in a way we’re witnessing today.

JOIN JENNIFER ON FACEBOOK FOR SPIRITUAL COMMENTARY AND ENCOURAGEMENT. CLICK HERE.

“I said, ‘Oh, Lord, is there a remedy? Is there a remedy? What shall the answer be?’ And He said, ‘Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceived and being deceived,'” Hagin shared. “And then I said, ‘Oh, Lord, do we have nothing to look forward to in the future except the darkness, the blackness, war, destruction, and evil?'”

Then Hagin looked into the spirit realm and saw something encouraging. Listen for yourself.

Personally, I have no tolerance for prophetic ministries that spew nothing but judgment and leave absolutely no room for God’s mercy when it’s clear He’s trying to turn a nation back to Himself. I believe it will be just as the Lord told me on April 21, 2007. I believe a Third Great Awakening is coming to this nation and indeed has already started.

Yes, I do believe God is disciplining America. Yes, I do believe that we’re reaping what we’ve sown. Yes, I do believe that things are going to get worse before they get better. But I absolutely, positively refuse to buy into the notion that God is not going to pour out His Spirit once again. I reject the idea that widespread transforming revival that sees a great harvest of souls is not possible in America.

Global Worship Movement Awakens Hearts in an Explosive New Way

It’s a global movement awakening hearts to worship and demonstrating the love and power of God. It’s inspiring millions of hungry believers to press into an authentic encounter with Jesus. And it was named after a baseball cap Banning Liebscher stumbled upon in a mall. Well, sort of.

Banning, then-youth pastor at Bethel Church in Redding, California, was shopping when he saw a hat sporting a logo that daringly prophesied a “Counter Culture.” The confrontational brand demanded attention, but Banning wasn’t interested in cultivating a counter culture. His heart was set on fostering a Jesus Culture—and that’s exactly what he’s been doing for the past 15 years. Although it’s not a replica of the Jesus movement, it is sweeping up youth in nations that are weary of powerless religion.

“After hosting many conferences, we were beginning to understand more of what the Lord had us establishing,” Banning says. “We knew we didn’t want to have only catalytic events, but desired to help people with the process of being a revivalist. In order for us to carry out the mandate of equipping and mobilizing a generation of revivalists, Jesus Culture focuses on events, music, campuses, leadership and resources.”

Jesus Culture has held events in many nations, including Germany, France, Hungary, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Brazil, Colombia, New Zealand and South Africa. Jesus Culture is introducing Christ’s love to a broken world and equipping young people to disciple nations—but the ministry’s beginnings were humble.

Born in a Manger

It all started in the summer of 1999, when Bethel Church’s youth group launched the first Jesus Culture Conference with worship leaders Kim Walker-Smith, Chris Quilala and Melissa How. About 500 came out to meet God, and He didn’t disappoint.

Jesus Culture cut its first album, Everything, in 2005. After a YouTube clip of Walker-Smith singing How He Loves in 2007, Jesus Culture gained mass influence in the Christian music world and became an official ministry of Bethel Church.

“We were just a bunch of kids going after God in a small Northern California town,” Quilala told me. “To see where God has taken the ministry over the years … it’s beyond anything we could’ve dreamed of. We are having a lot of fun and have certainly enjoyed the ride, but the thing I love most about being a part of Jesus Culture is that our vision is still the same: We just want to see people encounter God.”

Now, Jesus Culture is a church of its own where people encounter God on a weekly basis.

“When we knew that the Lord was sending us to go plant a church, we began to ask God where,” Banning told me. “I would pray into different cities in the nation, and none of them were coming alive to me when I prayed. But then I remembered a dream someone had sent me in 2011, and in the dream, I had an office in Sacramento, and I was 39 years old. Then we began to pray into Sacramento. After that, it became alive to us and obvious that was where we were supposed to be.”

Jesus Culture Sacramento Church was born in September 2014 with the tagline “Encountering God, empowering people, engaging our city.” Sacramento is especially strategic. It’s the capitol of what Banning calls a “critical state in the U.S.,” where government and business is influential for California and the nation.

Labor for City Transformation

“Our passion is the same locally as what we are doing nationally,” Banning told me. “We want to see cities and nations saved and transformed. We want to see the presence of God come and awaken the church, save the lost and transform culture. We have a passion to see every Christian raised up and sent into society to see that happen, to raise up leaders and flood Sacramento with them. And our heart is to be a family that gathers every week and then is sent back into the city to make a difference.”

Despite Jesus Culture’s celebrity in the nations, Banning wasn’t sure how many would come to the church or how long it would take to establish culture. He admits he was a little nervous about his ability to build a thriving community, but he’s enjoying the rhythm of the local church.

“I love building a community that is impacting a city, seeing people encounter God week in and week out, people finding a deep sense of community, finding freedom, equipped to live out a life following Jesus that bears fruit in every area,” Banning says. “I also love the building of culture by steady base hits. Events and itinerant ministry are very home run-based. Every event or speaking engagement is a home run, one-shot kind of concept. But culture and community and impacting cities is more of a whole bunch of base hits put together that make it happen.”

Banning is reporting something special happening in Sacramento churches: true unity he hasn’t seen at this level in America among churches that want to see a genuine move of God. He is convinced Sacramento is called to demonstrate and inspire unity in other cities in America—and if God does something significant in Sacramento, he believes it will ignite faith in cities around the world to believe for the same revival fire. Even now, Banning marvels at what the Lord has done through the Jesus Culture movement in the United States and beyond.

“Our movement has transitioned from just teens or young adults to a broader spectrum of the body of Christ,” Banning says. “But right now, our focus is on establishing this church and developing a movement that will raise up leaders in church, campus and culture. And our heart will always be to ignite a passion for Jesus in the hearts of believers through worship.”

A Defining and Glorious Weapon God Gives His Children

Rest is a defining and glorious weapon that God has given to His children in order to combat the confusion and distraction of the enemy.

The enemy sends the false need for busyness into our lives in order to deceive us into assuming that productivity is tied to activity.

In the Father’s kingdom, productivity is birthed from the DNA of rest. His victorious kingdom does not adhere to the principles and distorted thinking that are conceived in fleshly pursuits.

The enemy wants to keep you in a perpetual state of frustration and distraction. He wants to keep you involved in any empty activity that denies you the joy that is exclusively discovered in rest.

Satan wants you dissatisfied.

God wants you to rest.

The enemy wants you vexed and hustling.

God wants you to trust.

The devil wants you to fruitlessly spin empty plates in the air.

God wants you to be at ease in His presence.

For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength. Yet you were not willing” (Is. 30:15, MEV).

If the desire of your heart is to live a strong life and to experience a powerful existence that smacks with God’s pleasure, then you will choose the undeniable delight of quietness and rest!

Are you willing to live that life? Are you willing to embrace an extraordinary life of rest, trust and strength?

Are you willing to simply rest?

The voice of the deceiver absurdly attempts to overpower the wisdom of the kingdom. The enemy shouts incessantly and then throws false information in our direction that can either be embraced or ignored. Satan is solely capable of distributing propaganda that holds no eternal truth but only temporary fiction.

Rest is a powerful weapon of warfare and you will not win a battle without utilizing it.

When life is too busy … that is the time when you need to rest.

When you are spent and weary … take some time for rejuvenating rest.

When you don’t know what to do and are frustrated by the demands of the day … you can always choose to rest.

When you choose to rest, you will find God in that sweet place. God abides fully and completely in an atmosphere of quietness and trust.  When a believer enters into the joy of resting, God is able to bequest a victorious strategy and to give heaven’s opinion on every battle and every situation.

The commitment to rest is of such extreme importance and undeniable wisdom in the mindset of God, that He has actually set aside 1/7 of our earthly existence to be fully immersed in the miracle that only rest will accomplish.

No less than 14 percent of your life should be given to peaceful living, the shaking off of busyness and the dedication to simply breathing in His presence.

The miracle that occurs when an ordinary believer embraces the lifestyle of rest is that now you will be able to accomplish things in His strength that you could never accomplish in your own. You will now win battles that busyness would have caused you to abysmally lose. The benefit of rest and trust is that nothing will be impossible to you!

God does have a work for you to do but it is birthed in the factory of peace and is oiled with the service of righteousness. We work not from necessity but from trust. We accomplish great feats for the kingdom of God not in our own strength but in His shared strength.

“The work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever” (Is. 32:17, MEV).

It’s time for you to take a rest! {eoa}

Bill Johnson: Burning to See the Nations on Fire for Jesus

Bill Johnson was born for revival, but he didn’t start burning and shining for Jesus until he was a full-grown man. Though he was a pastor’s kid in a Spirit-filled church, the thought of circling the globe teaching hungry believers how to host the presence and release the power of God never once crossed his mind. Bill had his heart set on becoming a professional baseball player.

God had different plans and used an evangelist named Mario Murillo—whose ministry was born in the drug-obsessed, occult-saturated atmosphere in the epicenter of the violent student revolution in Berkeley, California—to get Bill’s attention. Through Murillo’s persuasive gospel messages about absolute abandonment to Christ mixed with raw healing, the Holy Spirit conquered Bill’s heart. Today, he’s a fifth-generation pastor on his dad’s side and a fourth-generation pastor on his mom’s side.

“I grew up in a very good Christian home and had a fear of God, and while I never lived in out-and-out rebellion, neither was I a passionate follower of Jesus,” Bill told me in the studios at Bethel Church in Redding, California, where he serves as senior leader. “One Saturday night, alone, I finally said yes to God—the absolute yes. For me, everything changed that night. My dad started teaching about worship and encounters with the presence of God, and I learned by experience that I don’t want to live without this. I’m still learning how to give Him a place where He has a profound influence on how I think and live.”

Over the past 45-plus years since that decisive night, Bill has learned plenty about the ways of God. He realized Holy Spirit lives in every believer but does not rest on every believer. He discovered Holy Spirit is in us for our sake, but He comes upon us for others’ sakes. He grasped the reality that Holy Spirit comes upon you so you can release the kingdom into broken situations so Jesus can be glorified. Bill has taught millions of believers around the world with ears to hear how to walk with the Spirit of God.

“What you focus on—the kingdom you’re aware of—is what you release into the atmosphere around you,” Bill says. “You’re actually influencing your surroundings by what’s going on inside. The world is filled with unbelief and sin and so many horrible things. The kingdom of God is filled with perfect trust and peace. You will always reflect the nature of the world you’re most aware of.”

When Miracles Started Breaking Out

Bill certainly reflects the character of Christ, but miracles, signs and wonders did not always mark his ministry. Under the leadership of his father in 1978, Bethel Church sent Bill to pastor Mountain Chapel in Weaverville, California, before he finally experienced what he points to as his “greatest breakthrough” in ministry nine years later.

“I would read about revivals,” Bill recalls. “I would read about John G. Lake and pray for people. Nothing ever happened. I just assumed you had to have a special gift for healing and I didn’t have it. I would try for a while and back off and get discouraged. I went to a John Wimber conference and heard him teach the same things I had been teaching for a couple of years—but they had the fruit of what they believed. I just had a theory. I realized I needed to take more risks and just not stop. It was the weirdest thing. When I came back, the miracles started.”

Bill pastored in Weaverville for 17 years before moving his family back to Redding, California, in 1996 to take the baton from his father and assume leadership of Bethel Church. He came with one non-negotiable condition: He was born for revival and would pursue revival. When Bill took the reigns, the outpouring started almost immediately in seed form and a harvest of miracle healings, including multiple cases of cancer, followed in the months ahead.

Today, Bethel has become a true movement in the body of Christ with the local church, the school of ministry, a media group, Bethel Music and a network of thousands of congregations around the world, but Bill is quick to point out that it’s all about a person—and it’s not him. Rather, it’s about Jesus and His heart being revealed in us, to us and through us. With that in mind, Bill has committed to create an atmosphere at Bethel where God is glorified and people are set free.

“The atmosphere issue is a big deal for me,” Bill says. “The two things that I keep focusing on the most are the principles of the kingdom and the presence of the King. If I can keep those two things in focus, we find that He ends up doing more stuff. You end up having more stuff happen by accident than we ever used to have on purpose. When the glory of God begins to come into the room, I’m not going to stop that to teach. I don’t have anything that important to say. To me, it’s all about the presence.”

Bill recalls one Sunday morning when two people were healed of broken necks during worship. Another Sunday morning, a woman had a tumor disappear that doctors couldn’t even remove with surgery. Of all the many miracles recorded and verified at Bethel, the one that fascinates him most was the 12-year-old boy whose family flew him in from Norway. He was fed intravenously for 10 years and confined to a wheelchair because his muscles were deteriorating. His parents did not know if he would live through the long journey, but they came believing.

“The family was so engaged with the anointing,” Bill shares. “They went to a restaurant afterward and gave him a piece of bread to smell because he enjoyed that … and he ate it. There was this moment of terror because he can’t digest food and his temperature within moments would rise to 106. He was dramatically, dramatically healed. And they did a book in Norway about it. It’s just absolutely stunning. But that will mark you. That will change you.”

Not everyone who comes to Bethel gets healed, but Bill refuses to blame or question God—and he has committed to cultivate an atmosphere and building faith for healing at Bethel for one biblical reason: Everyone who came to Jesus believing was healed.

“It’s the only acceptable standard,” Bill says. “I can either lower the Scripture to my level of experience or I can fight to raise my level of experience to the standard of the Scripture—and that’s what I’ve chosen to do. As a result, there’s heartache. There are times when you miss it. There are times when loved ones and dear friends die. There’s no explanation. I don’t need an explanation. I don’t ever ask why. I know if Jesus were in these shoes, they would’ve been healed.”

Life-Changing Encounters With God

Bill told me there was a time when his hunger for God, revival and miracles was so deep it would send him into depression. He got so discouraged at times he became self-critical.

“I would honestly confess sins I never committed just to cover my bases in case there was a wrong thought or attitude—it just became about me,” he reveals. “There’s something wrong when it’s all about you. It just came to this point where … I don’t want to say I made an agreement or contract with God, but it’s kind of how it worked out for me. I said, ‘Father, I’m in Your Word every day, every day. I don’t miss a day. And You said it’s like a sword. I’m inviting you to cut me deep. If I need the slap of a friend, please give me the slap of a friend.'”

In that moment, Bill stopped looking at himself and started crying out to God for fire to burn within him. In his experience, desperation for God takes people to a fork in the road—they either move into faith or unbelief. You can end up offended because of what God didn’t do or truly abandon yourself to God in faith without striving. He cautions believers everywhere not to let true hunger lead to an unhealthy frustration.

“If God is my servant, He will continually frustrate me,” Bill says. “If I’m His, I will constantly be amazed.”

After the initial encounter with God during Murillo’s fiery 1970 message, the Holy Spirit opened Bill’s eyes in 1979 to revelation in Isaiah 60—”Arise, shine for your light has come. The glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness will cover the earth, deep darkness the peoples. But His light will appear upon you. His glory will arise upon you.” He describes it as a subtle encounter with the Word of God.

“As I was reading that portion of Scripture—the entire chapter, actually—it just seemed to come alive, and I felt like the Lord was speaking to me that this was a prophetic word for the church in that hour,” Bill says. “I stopped and spent time there just praying over it and reading it over again and again and again. It just became alive. It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that experience—that Scripture come alive to me has affected every day of my life since then.”

The next encounter was not so subtle. Bill had been asking for more of God and praying so much he would wake himself up praying in his sleep. His prayer sounded like this: “God, I want more of You at any cost. I’ll pay any price.” Suddenly and in a frightening way, God answered his prayers. At 3 a.m. one morning, he woke up with the power of God surging through his body. He says felt like he was being electrocuted. He told me he actually felt his face turn red from embarrassment because of how he looked even though nobody could see him.

“I had no control of my limbs,” Bill recalls. “I had control of my head. That’s all. As soon as it started, I went from dead sleep to wide awake in a millisecond. I remember Jacob walked with a limp after his encounter. It affected how he walked. Mary was mother of the illegitimate child through her encounter. And so there was the question. ‘Did you mean it when you said you want more at any cost?’ I didn’t know if I’d ever be out of bed the rest of my life.”

“If I said yes, I didn’t know if I’d ever function again. And so probably 25 minutes or so, a half-hour into this, tears were just streaming down my cheeks. I set the side of my face under the pillow. I said, ‘I’ll take it.’ I said, ‘If I get You in exchange, You can do anything you want. I don’t care.’ So He was looking for me to give up my right to dignity. That changed everything.”

Bill Behind the Scenes

Kris Vallotton, senior associate leader of Bethel and co-founder of the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry, met Bill when he was 24 and lived with the Johnson family for six months. He told me there is no difference between the public Bill and the private Bill, except that he seems extroverted in the pulpit but is an introvert at heart.

“Bill is very quiet,” Kris told me. “You could ride in a car with him, and if you don’t talk to him, he won’t talk. He’s the most generous person I’ve ever met in my life. I’ve watched Bill and Beni give their food away and then pray in food for the week. He won’t enter into a negative conversation about anybody. He’s more likely to pray about a problem with someone than talk to them about it, and he is very forgiving.”

It may be difficult to believe, but Bill says he was never called into the ministry. He volunteered to help his dad at Bethel. He led the single adults. He taught Sunday school. He worked with young people on the streets during the hippie era. He helped with print publications. He helped in the bookstore. Wherever his dad needed help, he was there. But he always thought in the back of his mind it was short term.

“I didn’t like to talk in front of people,” Bill says. “I would take an ‘F’ on an exam if it meant talking in front of people. I hated to read. My parents thought my brother might be a pastor. But for me, they were just hoping I’d get to heaven. I was about three years into serving as staff for my dad when it hit me. I have a heart for this. The whole thought of talking in front of people and the stuff I do now terrified me. In God’s mercy, He just let me grow into it.”

Randy Clark, founder of Global Awakening, met Bill in 1994 at a conference. He told me Bill has an “amazing hunger” for God and is “more committed to pursuing revival than anybody I know.” John G. Lake—a Canadian-born healing evangelist who saw over 100,000 healings in the healing rooms ministry he founded in Spokane, Washington, in the early 1900s—is one of Bill’s heroes. That’s because of Lake’s understanding of the unseen world and how to cooperate with the Holy Spirit to bring breakthrough into people’s lives. Bill also loves Evan Roberts, the revivalist credited with leading the Welsh Revival that saw hundreds of thousands of souls come to Christ in a two-year period, for his childlike faith and joy.

“In addition to revival, Bill has pursued signs and wonders and healing more than anybody I know,” Randy told me. “Bill Johnson is a man who’s kind, gentle, loving and a great father. He was a great son to his father. He is as loyal as you’ll ever find. He’s more of an introvert who really enjoys his time alone with study and with God. He’s authentic. What you see on the stage is what you see off stage. Bill talks about the same passion.”

Banning Liebscher, senior director of Jesus Culture, was on staff at Bethel Church in Redding for 18 years and launched Jesus Culture Sacramento Church in 2014. He was 19 years old when he came on staff and told me Bill “massively shaped” who he is and how he thinks.

“Bill has kingdom priorities down like no one I have ever met,” Liebscher says. “Bill has a passion to host the presence of God and see cities experience an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, but he is not an ambitious man. He just wants to be faithful and obedient to what God is asking.”

Indeed, when I asked Bill Johnson, 65, what he wants to be remembered for, he didn’t point to the miracles, signs and wonders. He didn’t point to revival. He didn’t point to a sermon. He didn’t point to a megachurch. In truth, he really doesn’t care if anyone remembers him at all—and he didn’t hesitate to offer a simple yet profound answer: “I want to be remembered for being faithful, that I did what He said.”

Why the Actions of Some Christians Can Break Your Heart

It’s true. I’m proud to be a Christian, represent Jesus Christ and proclaim the gospel that has forever transposed my life.

But while I’m all “for” Christianity and the progression of the gospel, I can honestly say that the way some Christians act breaks my heart. It’s something that keeps me up at night. This is my struggle.

I’m not really sure what it derives from. Maybe it’s the “God hates fags” picket signs being somehow justified by interpretation of biblical text, or the extreme judgment that comes from most self-proclaimed cross bearers when someone in the public eye fails.

Regardless, I have a really hard time liking some Christians. I sometimes wonder, “God, why do you allow these people to represent you?”

I often wonder why pastors choose to bash the failures of public figures and use them as examples for sermon illustrations, or why Christian bloggers think it’s okay to spew personalized hatred towards someone for sake of clicks. Or better yet, why some churches find themselves bashing one another all because, “they’re just not like us.”

I understand we’re all entitled to an opinion, but that doesn’t mean our opinions have to be shared with cruelty and rashness. It can all be done in love and sincerity. And while I understand that not all Christians have chosen to act this way, a great percentage of them do. It’s disheartening. It’s a tiny flame that spreads like a wildfire.

  • Don’t like the way “that church” worships? That’s fine, but don’t be cruel and think your church is better because of it.
  • Your congregation prefers exegetical teaching as opposed to topical? Wonderful, but keep your judgments aside when noticing a church who does things differently. They’re reaching a different crowd.
  • Have you chosen a life that does not include the consumption of alcohol? That’s very honorable of you, but don’t be arrogant enough to proclaim that someone who drinks alcohol is going to hell.
  • Don’t like tattoos? More power to you, but don’t you wave your finger at someone and tell them that they’re an abomination to God because of their decision to ink their skin.
  • Have you chosen to abstain from prescription medication? That’s your decision, but keep your judgment of one’s true faith if someone who is suffering from depression decides to seek medication from a licensed psychiatrist.
  • Displeased with the failures of others? You’re allowed to be. But please don’t take to social media and display your judgment and distaste as if you and I are any better. Everybody makes mistakes. That’s why Jesus died on the cross.

When I read the Bible, the concept of love and grace is prevalent. But while I see these truths to be as clear as the moon in a cloudless night sky, I guess some see otherwise.

Once again, I’m proud to be a Christian but I cannot say I like the way all of them act. I would be the first to lay down my life for the One who laid down his, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be honest about my frustration towards some of Jesus’ personal advocates. It breaks my heart. It should break yours too.

The image of love-bearing is something we cannot ignore as a followers of Jesus. And regardless of how one may want to justify their ill-thought words and actions, my Bible is pretty clear on the idea of loving.

In fact, depending on what version of the Bible you prefer, the word “love” can be found anywhere between 250 to 550 times. That’s impressive. And let’s not forget the declaration to love our enemies found in Luke 6:35: “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be the sons of the Highest. For He is kind to the unthankful and the evil.”

Our job as followers of Jesus is to reflect an image of love—the same love Jesus showcased on a splintered plank of wood known as the cross. I’m not ignorant enough to believe Christians should be loved by all people—the Bible tells us this wouldn’t be the case if we are truly living out our God-given calling.

Without love we are meaningless. Without love we are without Jesus. We must understand that the gospel without love isn’t truly the gospel at all. Jesus himself is the image we must seek to reflect, and our mission is to love because He first loved us.

We as Christians must learn to exude a consequential image of God’s love through every facet of our lives. It has the power to change the world. {eoa}

Meaningful Worship and Dining With the King of Kings

One morning recently, I was reading my Bible and eating breakfast at the same time. I put a bite of egg in my mouth and chewed it. I had the fork raised to put another bite in my mouth when the Holy Spirit said quietly, “You haven’t finished the food in your mouth yet.”

Startled, I realized that in my distraction, I wasn’t even paying attention to the food I was eating. I wasn’t enjoying it. It was just a mindless ritual, a task to get out of the way until I moved on to the next thing.

I put the fork down. One of the principles of Take Back Your Temple is to “appreciate every bite.” Now, the reason for the principle started out based on biology. The brain has a built-in appetite regulator called the “Appestat” that kicks in about 20 minutes after you start eating. It tells you when you have had enough to eat. So if you are eating your meals in less time than that, it is possible that you are eating two or three times the amount that your body needs.

However, this time I saw this principle from a different perspective. You see, I teach Sunday school, and one of the upcoming lessons I’m teaching is called “Meaningless Worship.” It is based on Isaiah 29:9-16, in which the prophet spoke to the people of Judah about going through the motions in their worship. They performed the rituals, but their hearts were far from God.

In other words, it was just another task to get out of the way until they moved on to the next thing. Sound familiar?

The lesson commentary gave three reasons why worship had become meaningless to God’s people. You’ll see in a moment how it relates to eating:

1. Forgetting about the Life-Giver. The people were so caught up in their daily lives, pursuing their personal goals and dealing with life challenges that they did not acknowledge God’s presence or thank Him for their provision.

2. Failing to consult God about their daily decisions. They relied on their own understanding or everyone else but God to decide what actions to take.

3. Failing to spend time with God. They didn’t take time out of their day to seek the Lord about His plan and purpose for their lives, or for private prayer, praise and worship.

After thinking about this, I put my Bible aside. I decided to have breakfast with my King.

I put a bite of food into my mouth, thinking, “God, I am so grateful that You are with me and that You never leave me nor forsake me.”

I finished that bite and went on to the next one, remembering the Scripture, “Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, yes, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Is. 41:10).

After finishing that bite and in the middle of the next one, I thought, “God, thank You so much for providing this food to me.”

Several moments passed, in which I ate quietly, finishing and appreciating one bite at a time before moving on to the next. Finally, with the last bite came the thought, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.”

It was one of my most enjoyable breakfasts in a long time! Then I thought, “What if I could always think of my meals as an opportunity to dine with the King of Kings?”

While it is true that I pray before I eat, it had become a ritual, another task to get out of the way before moving on to the next thing. It was sobering to realize this. I was convicted of taking my Lord for granted in this area.

So I repented and said this prayer:

“Dear Precious Lord, thank You so much for having breakfast with me. Thank You for loving me enough to provide for all my needs according to Your riches in glory by Christ Jesus. I am sorry for not truly appreciating the food You provided for me today. You provided the clothes on my back and the roof over my head. I thank You for saving me, Lord. I thank You for giving me the opportunity to experience a real, daily relationship with you, not just engage in meaningless rituals. You created me fearfully and wonderfully. With every meal, Lord, I want to dine with You. I don’t want to just eat anymore. I want to upgrade my eating experience to dining. To me, dining means that I am eating with a friend. And what closer friend do I have than You? So dine with me, Lord. Each meal, tell me which foods we should have on the menu, and I will prepare them. I will set a quiet a place for us so that I can hear You speaking to me. Dine with me, Lord. Empty me of myself and fill me with Your presence. That will truly satisfy me—spirit, mind and body. Amen.”

I challenge you to dine with the King at your next meal. Not just eat—dine. After all, you are eating with a friend!

I hope, like me, you’ll decide to upgrade your meals and never rush through them again. God bless you this day as you dine with your King! {eoa}

One of the Most Difficult Virtues a Christian Can Develop

In Matthew 12:33, Jesus says, “for the tree is recognized by its fruit” (NIV). The point He is making here is that you and I are known by the fruit in our lives. And if we develop the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23), God will be honored and others will be drawn to Him through us.

Humility is a major fruit we need to develop to represent God well in this world and to be truly happy.

A humble person has the freedom to be wholly and completely who they are. They don’t have to impress anybody. They don’t feel pressured to be perfect or see themselves in competition with other people. They simply want to be the best version of them that they can be.

And that’s what God wants for you and me. He doesn’t see one person as more important than another. He gives us each the gifts and talents that we possess, as well as our privileges and position in life. It all comes from Him! So whether we are highly gifted in some area or we have an impressive job title, we are no more valuable to God than someone who seems to have fewer talents or whose work seems insignificant based on a worldly viewpoint.

It’s so important for us to understand that our true worth and value is not found in what we do, but in doing what God asks us to do. God is looking on our hearts, our motives and attitudes, and if our motives are not right, then whatever we’re doing, it is not acceptable to Him.

Jesus is our example of what it means to have a humble heart.

The Bible says that He, “being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness” (Phil. 2:6-7 NIV).

Jesus was wholly God. He had no sin or worldly defects. Yet He humbled Himself and became human so He could fulfill the plan and purpose God called Him to do on the Earth.

Jesus humbled Himself to the fullest … but look what happened.

Philippians 2:8-10 (NIV) says, “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.”

God exalted Jesus to the highest place of honor in heaven. And when you and I humble ourselves to carry out His plan, God lifts us up, too (1 Pet. 5:6.)

The Bible says that humility comes before honor and pride goes before destruction (Prov. 15:33; 16:18). And from time to time, we can expect God to test us in the area of humility.

Maybe you work at a place where you’re the only Christian and most days it’s unpleasant to be there. Maybe you’d prefer to take another job, which you could, but you know in your heart that God put you there for this season in your life, and you’re going to stay because it’s where God needs you.

Maybe someone you know has mistreated you and you’d love to get them back, but you’re doing the right thing and waiting on God, praying He’ll bless them, because you trust God to bring about justice in your life.

We need these kinds of situations salt-and-peppered into our lives every now and then. The truth is we just can’t seem to stay humble if all we have are blessings and success, because we start to think it’s all about us!

Out of all the Christian virtues, humility is probably the most difficult to develop. It’s something that has to be worked into us, just like a seed needs to be watered and nurtured in order to grow. We need to study humility in the Bible, spend time with God, and go through tests where we have to apply it. But it’s so worth it!

Matthew 11:28-29 tells us that through humility, we find rest for our souls.

When God asks you to humble yourself time and time again and you feel like there’s absolutely no way you can continue to do it, lean on Him to receive the strength you need.

God has so much that He wants to do in your life. He wants to give you favor and bless you in amazing ways. But first, you have to humble yourself and show Him that you’ll do whatever He asks you to do with those blessings. Otherwise you run the risk of hurting other people, rather than helping them see the beauty of the loving, faithful, giving God that we serve.

Make a determined decision to humble yourself, like Christ showed us to do. Develop this beautiful fruit of the Spirit—by His grace—and enjoy the many benefits it brings to your life! {eoa}
