Word Spirit Power

R.T. Kendall, Charles Carrin and Jack Taylor

(Chosen Books)

R.T. Kendall, Charles Carrin and Jack Taylor have worked alongside each other for years bringing the “Word, Spirit and power” teaching to the church. As Kendall puts it, a silent divorce between the emphasis on the Word and the Spirit has happened in the church, and the two need to be reunited for power.

The book establishes its framework with each author giving his story of being called to the ministry, being trained in theology and being frustrated by a lack of fruitfulness until baptized in the Holy Spirit.

Kendall was overcome with the presence of God and a strong assurance of salvation while driving in his car. Taylor was keenly interested in the Holy Spirit but found seminary only gave technical information, which left him unsatisfied until a retired missionary from China revealed her personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. Carrin shares a gripping testimony of how he fell into such depression that he was humbled enough to receive words of knowledge from a prisoner he was visiting, which led him to his baptism.

Besides giving these personal testimonies, Kendall, Carrin and Taylor also share the most important testimony of the Scriptures: laying out a foundation of support from the Word. When these veteran teachers were coming into this revelation in the ’70s, they had to overcome the predominant error of cessation theology, which taught that the gifts of the Spirit died out after the Scripture was canonized. Today, they still remind readers that nothing worthwhile happens without the power of the Spirit and the Word working together.

Mortal

Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee

(Faith Words)

Centuries have passed since civilization’s brush with apocalypse. The world’s greatest threats have all been silenced. There is no anger, no hatred, no war. There is only perfect fear. A terrible secret was closely guarded for centuries: every single soul walking the earth, though in appearance totally normal, is actually dead, long ago genetically stripped of true humanity.

Nine years have gone by since an unlikely hero named Rom Sebastian first discovered a secret and consumed an ancient potion of blood to bring himself back to life in Forbidden. Surviving against impossible odds, Rom has gathered a secret faction of followers who have also taken the blood-the first Mortals in a world that is dead.

But The Order has raised an elite army to hunt and crush the living. Division and betrayal threaten to destroy the Mortals from within. The final surviving hope for humanity teeters on the brink of annihilation and no one knows the path to survival.

On the heels of Forbidden comes MORTAL, the second novel in The Books of Mortals saga penned by Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee. Set in a terrifying, medieval future, where grim pageantry masks death, this tale of dark desires and staggering stakes peels back the layers of the heart for all who dare take the journey.

The Books of Mortals are three novels, each of which stands on its own, yet all are seamlessly woven into one epic thriller.

As One Devil to Another

Richard Platt

(Tyndale)

As One Devil to Another is an astonishing debut work that C. S. Lewis’s biographer and foremost Lewis authority Walter Hooper calls “a stunning achievement, the finest example of the genre of diabolical correspondence to appear since this genre was popularized by C. S. Lewis.”

Enter into this chilling and diabolical tale, one that reveals the very tricks and strategies of Hell. Through a series of letters between devils created by Platt, senior devil Slashreap trains his young protégé, Scardagger, to win an individual soul away from Heaven and into their clutches.

As the devils plot their way to triumph, they reveal the spiritual dangers and risks we face in today’s society. Their frighteningly accurate perspective on issues such as contemporary technology and sexual mores is interwoven with timeless matters such as the power of prayer, the purpose of suffering, and the promises held out by Heaven . . . and Hell.

Destined to become a modern classic, As One Devil to Another is a brilliantly written, deeply unsettling perspective on twenty-first-century society . . . a glimpse of ourselves through the eyes of those who have embraced their underworldly existence.

The Telling

Mike Duran

(Realms)

A prophet never loses his calling, only his way.

Disfigured with a hideous scar from his stepmother, Zeph Walker lives his life in seclusion, cloistering himself in a ramshackle bookstore on the outskirts of town. But Zeph is also blessed with a gift—an uncanny ability to foresee the future,to know peoples’ deepest sins and secrets. He calls it the Telling, but he has abandoned this gift to a life of solitude, unbelief, and despair—until two detectives escort him to the county morgue where he finds his own body lying on the gurney.

On the northern fringes of Death Valley, the city of Endurance is home to llama ranches, abandoned mines, roadside the mythical ninth gate of hell. Now, forced to investigate his own murder, Zeph discovers something even more insidious behind the urban legends and small-town eccentricities. Early miners unearthed a megalithasacred site where spiritual and physical forces converge and where an ancient subterranean presence broods. And only Zeph can stop it.

But the scar on Zeph’s face is nothing compared to the wound on his soul. For not only has he abandoned his gift and renounced heaven, but it was his own silence that spawned the evil. Can he overcome his own despair in time to seal the ninth gate of hell?
