The First Prayer in the First Congress – 1774

The First Prayer in the First Congress – 1774

O Lord our Heavenly Father, high and mighty King of kings, and Lord of lords, who dost from Thy throne behold all the dwellers on earth and reignest with power supreme and uncontrolled over all the kingdoms, empires and governments; look down in mercy, we beseech Thee, on these our American States, who have fled to Thee from the rod of the oppressor and thrown themselves on Thy gracious protection, desiring to be henceforth dependent only on Thee. To Thee have they appealed for the righteousness of their cause; to Thee do they now look up for that countenance and support, which Thou alone canst give. Take them, therefore, heavenly Father, under Thy nurturing care; give them wisdom in council and valor in the field; defeat the malicious designs of our cruel adversaries; convince them of the unrighteousness of their cause and if they persist in their sanguinary purposes, of own unerring justice, sounding in their hearts, constrain them to drop the weapons of war from their unnerved hands in the day of battle!

Be Thou present, O God of wisdom, and direct the councils of this honorable assembly; enable them to settle things on the best and surest foundation, that the scene of blood may be speedily closed, that order, harmony and peace may be effectually restored, and truth and justice, religion and piety, prevail and flourish amongst the people. Preserve the health of their bodies and vigor of their minds; shower down on them and the millions they here represent, such temporal blessings as Thou seest expedient for them in this world; and crown them with everlasting glory in the world to come. All this we ask in the name and through the merits of Jesus Christ, Thy Son and our Savior. Amen.

An Urgent Prayer Call

Forty Days to Save America is honored to participate in the America for Jesus rally. As the chairman of the board of governors for 40 Days and a board member for AFJ 2012, I am humbled to address the rally and lead in a season of prayer.

In what could be the most momentous election of our lifetime, everyone wants to know, “Who will lead America for the next four years?” The answer should be obvious: He who has led us for the past 236 years of our national existence—the Lord God Almighty!

The vast majority of people in America realize and acknowledge that the country is off track and that no one but God can save her. That’s why many have concluded that nothing short of a national awakening will do—hence, a call for prayer, fasting and action.

Choosing a president, members of Congress and governors is a sobering responsibility, especially given the multiple crises with which our nation is confronted. These men and women wield enormous power over the citizenry. They can confront the forces of evil that stalk us domestically and internationally, or ignore them. Our moral free-fall can continue, or they can call America back to its founding principles.

But it’s God who shapes our destiny—as individuals and as a nation. The people who lose sight of that are in mortal danger. That God will lead America is certain. Where He leads America depends on us. Our failure to acknowledge His sovereignty, to beg His forgiveness and humbly seek His guidance are responsible for America’s plight.

Who wins the election is important. But even the most favorable outcome imaginable will be only a temporal victory. The day after the election, we’ll still be a nation that’s morally and fiscally bankrupt, a nation that grows more distant from its Christian roots each year, and a nation whose leaders arrogantly refuse to acknowledge dependency on God for His guidance and security.

Forty Days to Save Americakicks off with America for Jesus in Philadelphia, the city where America was born. From now until Election Day (Nov. 6) we’re calling on all people of faith to pray and fast for a Third Great Awakening. Visit for daily prayer guidance.

Forty Days to Save America is based on the firm conviction that whatever else we do in this momentous year, we must begin by asking God for His forgiveness for our national and individual transgressions, and for His guidance in the essential task of choosing our leaders and renewing our nation.

We’re calling on pastors, priests and rabbis to open houses of worship across America for special services dedicated to seeking the nation’s salvation through another Great Awakening, and for every one of you to set aside time daily from now until Election Day to pray and seek God for His hand of blessing upon our nation. We hope these 40 days will be a time for all of us to rededicate our lives to God, and to make informed choices at the polls, in full awareness of our responsibilities as American citizens and our duty as Christians.

On Nov. 6, we will choose a president and other elected officials. We already have a leader: God Almighty! America’s survival depends on our acknowledgement of that reality as a nation.

Philadelphia’s Prophetic History

Loving God and loving mankind were the core values of William Penn’s philosophy of life and government when he established Philadelphia in 1682. More than 300 years later, those same values are still evident as the City of Brotherly Love hosts America for Jesus on Sept. 28-29.

Imprisoned for his faith and placed in solitary confinement in the Tower of London in 1668, Penn wrote the book, No Cross, No Crown. King Charles II was indebted to the Penn family due to large financial contributions. Realizing the chances of finding true freedom to worship in England were slim, Penn approached the king and requested land in America to develop a colony where people could worship freely. “It is a clear and just thing, and my God that has given it me through many difficulties will, I believe, bless and make [Pennsylvania] the seed of a nation,” Penn wrote. “I shall have a tender care to the government that it be well laid at first.”

Penn’s “Holy Experiment” planted seeds for the establishment of a free society, and Philadelphia found itself at the center of all of it. After growing into the largest city in the original 13 colonies and becoming the nation’s first capital, Philadelphia hosted many of the nation’s most historic events, beginning with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on Aug. 2, 1776. The U.S. Constitution was adopted on Sept. 17, 1787, by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. After being ratified by conventions in 11 states, the Constitution went into effect in March 1789. The Bill of Rights was also established in the city in 1791.

In 1751, the Pennsylvania General Assembly marked the 50th anniversary of Penn’s Charter of Privileges with the creation of the Liberty Bell, on which Leviticus 25:10 is inscribed: “Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto the inhabitants thereof.”

Penn’s concepts became the prototype for free democracies all over the world. The vision that God gave Penn for Philadelphia is not simply history—it is Philadelphia’s destiny and, ultimately, the purpose for our national identity.

Multiply

Francis Chan and Mark Beuving (David C. Cook)

Francis Chan’s newest title, Multiply: Disciples Making Disciples seems at first to be a straightforward book about the imperative for making disciples of Jesus and fulfilling the Great Commission. But as you delve further into the book, it switches gears and becomes an instruction manual to a basic understanding of Scripture—with material that could be used to make disciples (including study questions and links to video commentary with Chan and pastor/author David Platt).

As you continue through the book, it occurs to you that this is a marvelous holistic presentation of the gospel. And then it comes back full circle to making disciples. So which is it: A) A book about the importance of discipleship? B) A guide to understanding the Scriptures? C) An excellent introduction to Christianity?

The answer is: D) All of the above.

Multiply makes evident that a holistic presentation of the gospel cannot be separated from an exhortation to both evangelize and make disciples. Chan and Mark Beuving demonstrate from Genesis to Revelation how God planned to create a people for Himself, how He had a plan from the beginning to remedy humanity’s fall through Jesus, and how His followers have a part in that plan.

The Old Testament prophesies of the coming of both a perfect savior and king; the New Testament demonstrates how salvation was accomplished and how Jesus now comes to the world through the church as it proclaims the Good News.

Regardless of how Multiply is categorized, it is an exceptional teaching resource on many levels.
