Hurricane Helene Leaves Millions Without Power

Authorities rescued people trapped by floodwaters and more than 3 million customers were in the dark across much of the southeastern U.S. as Hurricane Helene weakened to a tropical storm over Georgia and South Carolina early Friday after making landfall overnight in northwestern Florida as a Category 4 storm.

Helene came ashore amid warnings from the National Hurricane Center that the enormous system could create a “nightmare” storm surge. There were at least four storm-related deaths.

Video on social media sites showed sheets of rain coming down in Perry, Florida, near where Helene made landfall, and siding being torn off buildings. One local news station showed a home that had flipped over. The community and much of surrounding Taylor County were without power.

In Citrus County, some 120 miles (193 kilometers) south of Perry, first responders were out in boats early Friday to rescue people trapped by the flooding.

“If you are trapped and need help please call for rescuers – DO NOT TRY TO TREAD FLOODWATERS YOURSELF,” the sheriff’s office warned in a Facebook post. The water may contain live wires, sewage, sharp objects and other debris, they posted.

As of Friday morning still carrying maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph) , Helene continued to weaken while moving farther inland over Georgia. The storm was about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east of Macon and about 100 miles (165 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta, moving north at 30 mph (48 kph) at 5 a.m., the hurricane center in Miami reported.

“We expect it to weaken further. It’s going to turn northward and turn northwestward and eventually move into Tennessee and Kentucky, and merge with a funnel system up in that area,” said Jack Beven, a senior hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center.

The storm should continue to weaken Friday afternoon, with winds dropping below 40 mph (64 kph), but it will still produce widespread heavy rain over the Appalachian Mountains with the possibility of mudslides and flash flooding, Beven said.

‘Unsurvivable’ Storm Surge, 130-MPH Winds: State of Emergency Issued for Hurricane Helene

As Hurricane Helene moves closer to the Florida coast, the storm is gaining strength and posing a serious threat to several states. Forecasters warn the storm could bring catastrophic flooding, dangerous winds, and life-threatening storm surge.

Meteorologists predict the storm could become a Category 4 hurricane with winds reaching 130 miles per hour and up to two feet of rain, potentially causing life-threatening flash floods.

“You can hide from the wind, and there will be significant wind in this storm, but you’ve got to run from the water,” said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Twenty counties in Florida are under mandatory evacuation orders, while the entire state – along with Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina – is under a state of emergency. Meanwhile, state relief efforts are underway, with thousands of linemen stationed in Tampa.

The Big Bend area could see between 10 and 20 feet of coastal flooding, which forecasters describe as an “unsurvivable” storm surge.

“If our community remains central in Helene’s path, we will see unprecedented damage like nothing we have ever seen,” said Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey.

Students Gather to See God ‘Pour Out His Spirit’

Thousands of students showed up early on their school campuses this morning with a singular focus – to pray for their friends, schools, communities and the unsaved.

See You at the Pole (SYATP) is a global movement of prayer that is student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led. It takes place on the fourth Wednesday in September.

For the last 34 years, young people have gathered at their school’s flag pole or other community location to “intercede for their leaders, schools, and families, asking God to bring moral and spiritual awakening to their campuses and countries,” reads a statement on the SYATP website.

The gatherings are constitutionally permissible at public schools because they’re student-led and take place outside of class time, usually before school starts. Adults are encouraged to pray in support of the students on campus by gathering nearby, at their places of work or worship.

“Schools are more than buildings. God wants to be present in them and bring transformation,” said SYATP. “This is the importance of prayer and the importance of See You at the Pole.”

The movement, which began in Burleson, Texas, has spread across the globe, and on this day students “all around the world in every time zone, for 24 be praying for their school, friends, families, churches, and communities.”

“See You at the Pole is a ‘moment,'” said Doug Clark, National Field Director of SYATP. “We hope adults and students will consider turning that moment into a movement by praying every day. …we need to ask God to pour out His Spirit on us more than ever. The heart of SYATP is extraordinary prayer.”

This year’s theme, “First, Pray,” comes from 1 Timothy 2:1 which says, “I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.”

Arrests Made Following First Use of ‘Suicide Pod’ in Switzerland

Police in northern Switzerland have detained several people and opened a criminal case in connection with the suspected death of a woman who died by the unauthorized use of a “suicide capsule.”

Exit International, an assisted suicide group based in the Netherlands, says it is behind the “Sarco” capsule.

The 3D-printed device is presumably designed to allow a person sitting in a reclining seat inside to push a button that injects nitrogen gas into the sealed chamber. The person is then supposed to fall asleep and die of suffocation.

According to Swiss Catholic News, the $1 million machine does not meet the country’s product safety requirements. Public prosecutors’ offices in several Swiss territories said they would initiate criminal proceedings if the capsule were used.

“It does not fulfill the demands of the product safety law, and as such, must not be brought into circulation,” said Health Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. “On the other hand, the corresponding use of nitrogen is not compatible with the article on purpose in the chemicals law.

“It must not be placed on the market,” she added.

An “assisted suicide” involving the Sarco took place Monday near a forest in Merishausen, Swiss police said in a statement.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation on suspicion of incitement and accessory to suicide. A conviction could trigger a sentence of up to five years in prison.

Police in northern Switzerland confirmed that “several people” were taken into custody and Volkskrant, a Dutch Newspaper, reported Tuesday that police detained one of its photographers who wanted to take pictures of the Sarco in use.

It said Schaffhausen police had indicated the photographer was being held at a police station but declined to explain further.

In an email, the Dutch Foreign Ministry told the Associated Press that it was in contact with the newspaper and Swiss officials. “As always, we cannot interfere in the legal process of another country. At the same time, the Netherlands stands firmly for press freedom,” it said.

Exit International shared in a statement that the person who died was a 64-year-old woman from the U.S. Midwest, who had suffered from “severe immune compromise.” The group provided no further details.

Southeastern U.S. on High Alert as Helene Nears

Heavy rains lashed the Cayman Islands Tuesday as forecasters warned that a major hurricane is en route to the southeast U.S.

Hurricane watches were in effect for Florida’s Tampa Bay and from Englewood to Indian Pass, as well as for eastern Mexico from Cabo Catoche to Tulum and for Cuba’s Pinar del Rio province. Hurricane conditions could be possible in parts of Cuba and Mexico early Wednesday and in parts of Florida late Wednesday and through the day Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The disturbance is moving into “extremely deep and warm waters” that would fuel its intensification.

“Conditions look quite favorable for strengthening over the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday,” the center said. “This system will become quite large and powerful before landfall.”

The disturbance became Tropical Storm Helene late Tuesday and will strengthen into a Category-3 hurricane before approaching the northeast Gulf Coast. Since 2000, eight major hurricanes have made landfall in Florida, according to Philip Klotzbach, a Colorado State University hurricane researcher.

Given the anticipated large size, storm surge, wind and rain will extend far from the center of the expected storm, especially on the east side. The center warned of “inland penetration of strong winds over parts of the southeastern United States after landfall.”

Meanwhile, a storm surge watch was in effect for Florida’s Tampa Bay, Charlotte Harbor and from Indian Pass south to Flamingo. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida, urged people to take potential evacuations seriously.

“10-15ft of surge is NOT survivable,” it wrote on the social media platform X.

On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 41 counties.

FaithFest Draws Huge Crowds: Hundreds Embrace New Faith in Christ

Tens of thousands of God-seekers in North Carolina attended a Christian festival with the single aim of “lifting up and glorifying Jesus Christ,” and hundreds of those attendees ended the weekend making decisions to “surrender their lives” to Him. More than 70 people were immediately baptized.

FaithFestNC 2024 kicked off this weekend in Wilkesboro, North Carolina and featured prominent Christian musicians including Rend Collective, We The Kingdom, Jason Crabb, and Matthew West.

The seventh annual event is a part of Craig Church Ministries, and according to its website it “uses worship music (in a variety of genres) and the Word of God (via testimonies and the preached Word) to unite believers, save the lost, bring a community together, and spark a revival that will change our area and beyond.”

“I’ve never seen so many people so hungry and desperate for God in my life. I think we’re in the midst of a spiritual awakening. The world doesn’t see it. But I’m witnessing it,” he remarked.

King told CBN News that FaithFest is a unique Christian music festival because its focus is bringing souls into the Kingdom.

“I’ve preached at dozens of Christian music festivals over the past 37 years, but what sets FaithFest apart is their focus on evangelism. They prioritized the proclamation of the Gospel and as a result, we saw hundreds and hundreds of decisions for Christ,” he explained.

University of Arkansas Sees 10,000 Seek Jesus in Powerful Revival

In the fourth major collegiate revival in less than a month, thousands of students gathered at the University of Arkansas on Thursday night, Sept. 19, to seek Jesus Christ and find salvation in His name.

Unite US reports that 10,000 students from 67 different universities gathered in Bud Walton Arena.

“Jesus met us there,” the ministry said in an Instagram post. “We were blown away by His presence in the room and how it carried over to baptisms. It was a night we’ll never forget.”

One young man shared his powerful testimony right before getting baptized at the event, saying, “I spent a lot of years running from God. I just came to Jesus about five weeks ago, but I got caught up in, I’ll just say it, cocaine and alcohol. I had a lot of really near-death experiences and I think Jesus had His hand on my life because I should not be here.”

Evangelist Tanya Pruett reports that, so far, over 2,000 salvations and over 800 baptisms have taken place through the Unite US campus events over the past year.

“I believe this is the generation that will usher in the greatest move of God we’ve ever seen, and we’re seeing that,” Pruett said during a recent podcast. “And I do believe what we had in the fall and the spring of this past year is just the beginning. Greater things are coming, and I feel for the end of this year and leading into 2025, something greater is coming. God is doing something across this nation… I do believe this move of God on college campuses is ushering in a greater awakening.”

Tuition-Free School Launched by Church After Public Library Uproar

Necessity, the old adage goes, is the mother of invention.

Justin Walker, pastor of Salt and Light Baptist Church just outside Louisville, Kentucky, experienced that proverb firsthand—and it birthed a vision for a tuition-free, church-sponsored grade school, First Principles Academy.

The Origin
For years, Walker told CBN News, he led a small but stable congregation alongside his wife Sarah, with whom he shared six children. But then tragedy struck: in the summer of 2020, when the congregation—like many across the country—was struggling to find its footing amid a pandemic, the pastor’s wife received a devastating diagnosis.

She had stage four cancer. After months of battling the brutal disease, Sarah passed away in March 2021.

Overnight, Walker became a single father of six—five of whom live at home and were homeschooled—as well as a bi-vocational pastor working full-time for a family fabric business. It was in that season of struggle, when he was stretched and struck by grief more than ever before, that Walker saw a need.

“I didn’t realize it at first, but it really stemmed from my wife passing,” the pastor said, reflecting on the origin of his vision to launch a tuition-free school for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade. “I used to say that ‘we homeschool,’ and then my wife passed, and I realized, ‘Oh, my wife homeschooled.’”

Order Stephen E. Strang’s “Spirit-Led Living in an Upside-Down World” on !

That was now Walker’s job. As he began taking on those tasks, the grieving father brought one of his daughters to a local public library to find something for her to read.

“It was the first of June, and they were pushing all of these LGBTQ books on my daughter in the public library, and I was so upset,” he said. “And I just made this personal post on Facebook. I took a picture of the books they were [trying to give my 11-year-old daughter] … and I was so upset at that. … I took a picture of [the books] and I posted them on Facebook and I said, ‘Shame on you, public library, for pushing these books on my daughter. We won’t be back.’”

That post, Walker recalled, sparked “a huge firestorm” on social media and it made clear to him there was “a great need” in his community for a better educational alternative.

“The more I started looking, the more I realized there’s a mission field in our own backyard that the average church is not involved in, and that mission field is 50 million American children that are going to public schools every day where things like what just happened to my daughter in the library are happening all day long. And here I am, the pastor of a church, supposed to be a community leader, and what are we doing about this? No one’s even talking about it.”
