The One Bible Verse America Desperately Needs Right Now

America is desperately in need of unity—a fact that led Dr. Ronnie Floyd, president of the National Day of Prayer and the former head of the Southern Baptist Convention, to recommend a key Bible verse that he believes people truly need right now: Ephesians 4:3, which reads, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Money usually includes currencies and coins, but has included gold, silver, copper, shells, tea, cigarettes, barley and other things in the past.</p> <p>Money has, and is defined by, its three functions. First, money is a medium of exchange (I can buy a new suit with dollars). Second, it is a unit of account (The suit I want costs $400). Third, money is a store of value (I can save my dollars and buy the new suit in six months). Anything that fulfills the three functions would be considered money.</p> <p>Today, gold and silver may be a good investment, but since they are not generally accepted for payment of goods and services, they would not be considered as money. In countries with hyperinflation, a country’s legal currency may cease being money, since it is not a store of value and might not be widely accepted. A credit card is not money but is a convenient way of accessing credit. Similarly, a debit card is not money, but is an efficient way of accessing our money in the bank.</p> <p>Societies and cultures will use money, even if they have to create it. Barter economies exist when people trade goods and/or services for all of their needs. Barter economies are very inefficient. For a successful barter, one must find a person who has an item that you need, and they must want what you have to barter. The process is very time consuming. Barter is so inefficient that when legal tender is nonexistent or scare, people usually invent their own money. Prisoner-of-war camps during World War II often used cigarettes as the money of choice. Isolated islands have used shells. Early America used tobacco.</p> <p>The Lord has said a lot about money and wealth. In the New American Standard version of the Bible, the word “money” occurs 153 times, and the word “wealth” occurs 87 times. If indirect references such as prosperity, gold, silver, minas (and other currencies) are included, the word count increases dramatically.</p> <p>Money is a tool—nothing more and nothing less. Monies and wealth can be used to glorify God, spread the gospel, assist the poor, free time from secular to more spiritual activities (family, church, charity and more) and improve the standard of living for our families and others. Monies and wealth can also be used to foster pride, encourage laziness, take advantage of the poor, support activities and programs specifically prohibited by the Word of God and encourage a self-indulgent, hoarding lifestyle isolated from the hurting. Money and wealth can move us closer to God or further away.</p> <p>Remembering and applying the Word of God to our lives is our compass in navigating the waters of money and wealth. Remembering the following principles will help.</p> <ul> <li style="color: #000000; text-decoration: none;">Do not love money; love God. Money can be enticing. It is our privilege to love the Lord with all that we have and others as ourselves.</li> </ul> <p>” You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself'” (Mark 12:3-31b).</p> <p>“For the love of money is the root of all evil. While coveting after money, some have strayed from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” (1 Tim. 6:10).</p> <p>“He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with increase” (Eccl. 5:10a).</p> <ul> <li style="color: #000000; text-decoration: none;">Remember that God is our source and security in both times of abundance and scarcity. The Lord gives power to obtain wealth. He will not leave us.</li> </ul> <p>“Otherwise, you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’ But you must remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to get wealth, so that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is today” (Deut. 8:17-18).</p> <p>“Let your lives be without love of money, and be content with the things you have. For He has said: ‘I will never leave you, nor forsake you” (Heb. 13:5).</p> <p>“(For the Gentiles seek after all these things.) For your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be given to you” (Matt. 6:32-33).</p> <ul> <li style="color: #000000; text-decoration: none;">Remember that we will be held accountable for how we use the financial and other resources at our disposal. The Lord was watching when the widow gave everything she had. In the parable of the minas, the nobleman asked an accounting of the minas entrusted to the slaves.</li> </ul> <p>“Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. Many who were rich put in much. But a certain poor widow came and put in two mites, which make a farthing” (Mark 12:41-42).</p> <p>“They did so, and made them all sit down. Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. They all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of broken pieces that remained were collected” (Luke 9:15-17).</p> <p>The Lord has made it clear: We all have a choice of whom to serve. We can serve money and wealth, or we can follow God, but we can’t serve both. Let us make a wise choice.</p> <p>“No one can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Yes, he’s the disciple who is often remembered for sinking (after walking on water) because he took his eyes off of Jesus; for being rebuked by Jesus (“Get behind me, Satan!”); and for denying Christ (not once, but three times in the same night) immediately after telling Jesus—to His face—that he wouldn’t.</p> <p>Had Peter been on social media back in the day I’m sure his most-used emoji would have been the face-palm one.</p> <p>I can relate.</p> <p>What I really love about Peter is the transformation that took place in his life following his encounter with the Holy Spirit in the upper room. He went from following Jesus at a distance to standing up boldly to deliver a message that resulted in 3,000 people believing in Jesus, thus launching the church.</p> <p>Here’s what he said: “For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps (1 Pet. 2:21, NLT).</p> <p>Peter didn’t just pen these words; he lived them. He did good, he suffered martyrdom and followed in the steps of Christ.</p> <p>We, too, are called to live like Jesus. And if we’re going to live like Jesus, we should love like Jesus loved, do what Jesus did, and say what Jesus said. But what about things He didn’t say?</p> <p><strong>11 Things Jesus Didn’t Say</strong></p> <ol> <li><strong>Church isn’t really that important.</strong></li> </ol> <p>The author of Hebrews confirms that gathering for worship with other believers is so vital that it should be habitual.</p> <p>“Let us not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but let us exhort one another, especially as you see the Day approaching” (Heb. 10:25, MEV).</p> <p>Here are 5 reasons why church is important:</p> <ol> <li>Jesus died for it.</li> <li>Jesus is the head of it.</li> <li>Jesus said He would build it.</li> <li>Jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail against it.</li> <li>Jesus chose it as the vehicle to advance His kingdom.</li> </ol> <p>Be the church.</p> <p>Got to church.</p> <p>Grow the church.</p> <ol start="2"> <li><strong>Blessed are those who are more passionate about politics than their faith.</strong></li> </ol> <p>Christians who find themselves defending their political posture more than sharing their faith have bought into a different gospel.</p> <p>When the apostle Paul spoke to political leaders, he preached Jesus. He also reminded believers to submit to the government and its officers. See Titus 3:1-2.</p> <p>The next time you feel the urge to blast political leaders on your social media platform, stop and pray for them.</p> <ol start="3"> <li><strong>Winning an argument is more important than winning the person.</strong></li> </ol> <p>You can win an argument and lose the person. Is it worth it? No.</p> <p>I’m not saying that there aren’t times to take a bold stance like Jesus did. But the requirement for this is not to be a jerk. In Robbie Dawkins’ book <em>Do What Jesus Did</em>, he shares a story of praying with an atheist. Robbie could have debated God’s existence and won his argument, but he would have lost the opportunity to pray with the young man. By simply sharing the love of Jesus, Robbie earned the right to pray with him.</p> <p>According to 1 Corinthians 13, if we don’t communicate our message in love, our message is worthless.</p> <p>In fact, even Paul said foolish arguments are foolish: “But avoid foolish debates, genealogies, contentions, and arguments about the law, for they are unprofitable and useless” (Titus 3:9).</p> <ol start="4"> <li><strong>Embracing all faiths is Christlike.</strong></li> </ol> <p>Although it is true that we are commanded to love everyone, there is absolutely no place is Scripture that affirms or condones that we embrace any belief system other than Jesus.</p> <p>Not only did Jesus proclaim that He is the only way (John 14:6), but Paul condemned anyone who preaches anything other than Jesus: “Although if we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel to you than the one we have preached to you, let him be accursed” (Gal. 1:8).</p> <ol start="5"> <li><strong>Everyone is going to heaven.</strong></li> </ol> <p>What did Jesus say?</p> <p>“Enter at the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who are going through it, because small is the gate and narrow is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matt. 7:13-14).</p> <ol start="6"> <li><strong>I will let you into heaven as long as you’re a good person.</strong></li> </ol> <p>Jesus loves sinners like me, but He is intolerant toward sin—and the only way to heaven is to repent of sin and accept the free gift of salvation (by confessing and putting your faith in Christ).</p> <p>Getting into heaven has nothing to do with us being good or even the good deeds we do—but has everything to do with what Jesus already did on the cross (see John 6:44).</p> <p>And for the record, no one is good (see Luke 18:19).</p> <ol start="7"> <li><strong>It’s your body. Do what you want with it.</strong></li> </ol> <p>While our culture encourages this, God’s word says the opposite: “What? Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God, and that you are not your own? You were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Cor. 6:19-20).</p> <p>The good news is that whatever bad choices you already made with your body, the blood of Jesus is good enough to make you clean. He’ll even remove any guilt and shame that weighs you down.</p> <ol start="8"> <li><strong>I love Christians more than unbelievers.</strong></li> </ol> <p>God loves all of us the same, so be careful not to forget where you used to be before He rescued you.</p> <p>“We also were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various desires and pleasures, living in evil and envy, filled with hatred and hating each other. But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward mankind appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of rebirth and the renewal of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:3-5).</p> <ol start="9"> <li><strong>The world will know we are Christians by our knowledge of Scripture.</strong></li> </ol> <p>Though memorizing Scripture is important, Jesus said that it’s our love for one another that will prove to the world that we are His disciples. See John 13:35 and 1 Corinthians 13.</p> <ol start="10"> <li><strong>Homosexuality is worse than all other sins combined.</strong></li> </ol> <p>Sin is sin. Yes, there are specific sins that have greater consequences, but any disobedience is sin. Here’s what James 2:10 says: “For whoever shall keep the whole law and yet offend in one point is guilty of breaking the whole law.”</p> <p>I also want to point out that Jesus blasted the religious leaders of His day for their spiritual arrogance more often than He did the sexually immoral. See Matthew 23.</p> <ol start="11"> <li><strong>You have to behave before you belong.</strong></li> </ol> <p>One of my favorite stories in the Gospels is found in Luke 5. Jesus asked Matthew—a despised and hated tax collector—to follow Him. Matthew didn’t have to first pass a test; he didn’t have to jump through spiritual hoops; and he didn’t have pay back everyone he ripped off before he could follow. Jesus just invited him to belong, period.</p> <p>Matthew was so excited that he threw a party (with other notorious sinners) and made Jesus the guest of honor! It’s ironic that the only ones who had a problem with this were the Pharisees. Jesus confronted their disdain by declaring that He came for those who know they are sinners—not for those who think they are righteous. Yonathan Budiantoro of Surabaya Pentecostal Church, told the Christian charity Open Doors International that the morning service is the “worshippers’ favorite time” to be at the church.</p> <p>Asked what might have happened had the bomber made it inside, he said: “I can’t imagine. There would be so many victims. A 52-year-old security guard died, as did four church members, including a 17-year-old who tried to prevent the bombers’ car from passing through the church gate.</div> <p>The church has since posted a list of missing church members.</p> <p>Meanwhile, reconstruction work at the church has been held up, as police are still gathering evidence as to what type of bomb was used, according to Catholic news agency UCAN.</p> <p>Soehendro, a church worker who was inside the church at the time of the blast, said the church needs major repairs as its interior was seriously damaged.</p> <p>“The blast was huge and caused the ceiling to collapse. Your words now have destroying power.</p> <p>You carry the same power Jesus did. Your words speak life or death (Prov. 18:21). What are you going to release with your words? We are in a consistent spiritual war, a war that is won by prayer, declaring and the words we speak out into the spiritual atmosphere. The battle cannot be won in our minds. We must learn to get up, get active and speak and decree out against the attacks of the enemy. We have binding and loosing power through the words we speak.</p> <p>You have the power within you, the Holy Spirit, to annihilate and abolish the powers of darkness coming against you. Your words are powerful, but you have to know the power they carry. One way you can know the power of your words is by being in the Word of God daily. When we are fighting a battle, one of the greatest things we can speak out into the spiritual atmosphere to combat attacks is the Word of God. The Word of God is sharper than a two- edged sword (see Heb. 4:12). The two-edged sword is powerful, but what you need to know is one side of that blade is the Word you take in, and the other side is the Word you speak out. You need both parts of that sword, your intake and output, to conquer spiritual attacks.</p> <p>In order to combat spiritual attacks, you must believe you have the authority to release something out of your mouth to break up the atmosphere. You have enough power in your words to change and charge the spiritual realm. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control.” I like how the Complete Jewish Bible also states this verse. Instead, of the word “self-control,” it says “discipline.” This verse is often quoted for people who need to overcome fear. Instead of focusing on the word “fear,” let’s focus on what God has given us. He has given us a spirit of power and love. He has given us discipline and self-control. He has empowered us! Therefore, if God has given us power, love, discipline and self-control we should use it to take hold of our circumstances instead of allowing our circumstances to take hold of us.</p> <p>He has given us the power, but we need to come to a realization that our words are prophetic and when we speak out we are targeting the spiritual realm. The spiritual realm must act with a positive or negative response. We have authority. We have received the infilling of the Holy Spirit when we ask. Now let’s use something we asked for and speak out, declare out and decree out and watch our situations change.</p> <p>Declare out today: When I speak the spiritual realm will activate.
