Prophecy: The Lord’s Treasuries Are Being Opened to the South African Apostles He Has Called to America

Prophetic ministers Russ and Kitty Walden of Father’s Heart Ministry have shared a new word with readers of Elijah List in which they say the Lord told them that apostles coming out of South Africa will soon provide an outpouring on His behalf, even here in America.

They wrote, in part:

Regime change has come. New authority is coming upon those who will come out of obscurity and into a new station of authority and glory. Over South Africa it shall be declared holy to the Lord and over South Africa it shall be known that My name shall be called holy. You shall no longer be forsaken. You will not be orphaned and you will not be widowed. Out of desolation will come new life and out of barrenness shall a generation of youth come forth in rejoicing in the outpouring of My Spirit.

To the apostles of South Africa, whom I have brought to American soil, I say that you have not come to this land in vain. You wondered and you have pondered for the travailing has been long and the harvest has been lean. Know that the time of greater harvest has come. I have raised up generations of South African apostles to leave their shores and come to America that you might pay the love debt of John G. Lake. As John Lake laid his life down as an apostle for the people of South Africa, so I have called you to come to America and lay apostolic foundations that will not be broken or torn asunder by the enemy. The enemy has taunted and the enemy has said, “America is mine,” but I am changing all of that.

This Spoken Sentence Releases Supernatural Power

Stop what you’re doing for a moment and take in the creation. The spellbinding reality is that none of what you see in nature is the product of hammers and nails, lines of code or made from any preexisting material. The Bible is clear about the creation and all that’s in it. In the beginning there was nothing, but when God declared, “Let there be …” the power of His spoken Word flung the planets into their alignment, lit up the sky with light, and gave breath to newly created creatures (see Gen 1:3–27).

The Power of God’s Word

God’s Word at creation had unrivaled, limitless power … and it never went away. In fact, as I explore in my book, Activating the Power of God’s Word, a common word we all use to describe the cosmos bolsters this truth. Think about the word “universe.” It’s made up of two Latin words: unos, which means “one,” and versus (from which we get the word “verse”), denoting a spoken sentence. Now put that all together and think about what it means. When we speak about the universe that we live in, we affirm a significant truth of Scripture: we live inside of a single spoken sentence.

Isn’t this just what John proclaimed: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1)? Isn’t this what Peter asserted: “that, by the word of God … the earth was formed” (2 Pet. 3:5)? Isn’t this what the author of Hebrews boasts: “He upholds all things by the word of His power” (Heb. 1:3)?

More Words of God to Sustain You

Now take your mind off of what’s around you and begin to focus in on you—your life and your situations. The same Word that sustains the ocean tides, the sun rise and sun sets is also in control of your life. God’s spoken Words at creation aren’t the only Words with sustaining power. But this Bible is full of more words that uphold all things.

  • Your finances are sustained by the power of His Word that He will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory (Phil. 4:19).

  • Your health is sustained by the power of His Word that He forgives all your iniquity and heals all your diseases (Ps. 103:3).

  • And your sanity is sustained by the power of His Word that His peace guards your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:6).

What needs restoration and refreshment in your life? Open your Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to that one Word that speaks to your situation. There’s something in there for everything, I promise. When you find it, cling to it—stand on it—declare it—and watch its power go to Work in you. {eoa}

Dr. Eddie Hyatt: Gorsuch and the Christian History of the Supreme Court

When Neal Gorsuch is sworn in as the 113th Justice of the United States Supreme Court, he will become part of an august judicial body with an overt Christian history—a history the secularists would like to obliterate.

Gorsuch, who was raised Catholic and attends an Episcopalian church, has indicated that his faith in God is very important to him. In this he stands in harmony with Antonin Scalia, whom he has replaced, and a long tradition of the court going back to the Founders.

The First Chief Justice

The first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, John Jay, was a devout Christian. He was one of the authors of The Federalist Papers and also served as president of the Continental Congress from 1778-79. In 1789, George Washington appointed him as the first chief justice of the Supreme Court, a post he held until 1795 when he resigned to serve as governor of New York.

Jay, like the entire founding generation, saw no conflict between his faith and his duties as Chief Justice. He once publicly declared:

Unto Him who is the author and giver of all good, I render sincere and humble thanks for His manifold and unmerited blessings, and especially for our redemption and salvation by His beloved Son. Blessed be His holy name.

The Second Chief Justice

John Marshall (1755-1835) succeeded John Jay as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Many consider him to be the greatest Chief Justice the Court has known. He served in this capacity for 34 years, and during that time, he heard cases and offered groundbreaking opinions that continue to guide the Supreme Court and the United States government today.

In one of his writings, Marshall clearly states what every founder assumed—that the founding documents and institutions on which the nation was formed presuppose a commitment to Christian principles and values. He wrote:

No person, I believe, questions the importance of religion in the happiness of man even during his existence in this world … The American population is entirely Christian, and with us Christianity and religion are identified. It would be strange, indeed, if with such a people, our institutions did not presuppose Christianity, and did not refer to it, and exhibit relations with it (Hyatt, Pilgrims and Patriots, 166).

That Marshall saw no problem with expressions of faith in government is demonstrated by the fact that he ordered the Supreme Court facilities to be made available to a congregation for their Sunday gatherings. So each Sunday, the singing of Christian hymns and the preaching of God’s Word could be heard ringing through the chambers of the United States Supreme Court.

Justice Joseph Story

Joseph Story (1779-1845) served as a Supreme Court justice for 34 years from 1811-1845. He is particularly remembered for his Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States, first published in 1833. This work is considered a cornerstone of early American jurisprudence and remains a critical source of historical information about the forming of the American republic and the early struggles to define its law.

Like the Founding Fathers, Story believed that Christianity provided the values and philosophical presuppositions necessary for a stable and prosperous nation. He pointed out that the First Amendment was not a ban on faith in government, nor did it indicate an indifference to Christianity by the Founders. He wrote:

We are not to attribute this prohibition of a national religious establishment to an indifference in religion, and especially to Christianity, which none could hold in more reverence than the framers of the Constitution (Hyatt, Pilgrims and Patriots, 152-53).

America a Christian Nation

In the 1892 case of Church of the Holy Trinity v. The United States, the United States Supreme Court declared America to be a Christian nation. This ruling came after examining thousands of documents related to America’s origins and history. In its ruling the Court declared:

Our laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of The Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise; and in this sense and to this extent our civilization and our institutions are emphatically Christian … From the discovery of this continent to the present hour, there is a single voice making this affirmation … we find everywhere a clear recognition of the same truth that this is a Christian nation (Hyatt, Pilgrims and Patriots, 167).

This clear statement, made by the nation’s highest court, was based on historical precedent going all the way back to the nation’s founding. Precedent is on our side.

Antonin Scalia

The justice Gorsuch has replaced, the late Antonin Scalia, understood this. Because he knew American history, Scalia saw no conflict between his faith and his duties as a Supreme Court justice.

Scalia made it clear that he was guided in life and on the bench by his Christian faith and he encouraged others to be bold in their faith. Speaking to a Christian conference, he exhorted those present to be willing to be “fools for Christ.” He said:

God assumed from the beginning that the wise of the world would consider Christians as fools … and he has not been disappointed. If I have brought any message today, it is this. Have the courage to have your wisdom considered as stupidity. Be fools for Christ. And have the courage to suffer the contempt of the sophisticated world.

The Key to a Happy Nation

Let us, therefore, pray that Neal Gorsuch and other Christians on the court will not be intimidated concerning their faith in God. Let us also pray that the nation’s highest court will be filled with devout followers of Christ, for only when the righteous are in authority can we have any hope of being a happy nation.

This is what George Washington had in mind when he wrote in 1783 to the governors of the young nation and exhorted them, saying:

Let us demean ourselves with that charity, humility and temper of mind, which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of His example in these things, we cannot hope to be a happy nation (Hyatt, Pilgrims and Patriots, 134). {eoa}

Billy Graham Shares the Real Reason People Wanted to Kill Jesus

Easter Sunday allows many believers the opportunity to reflect on their faith, why they surrendered all to a man who sacrificed Himself so we wouldn’t spend eternity apart.

As Christians, we know Jesus is love. We know He is perfect.

But today, as when Christ Himself walked the earth, He is despised by many. As the apostle Paul said, He humbled himself to the death of the cross.

Evangelist Billy Graham explains why:

Those who wanted to kill Jesus did so for one main reason: They didn’t want to hand over the control of their lives to Him. To put it another way, they realized that if Jesus was the Son of God (as He claimed), then they couldn’t keep on living the way they wanted to.

Think, for example, of King Herod. When the wise men came to Jerusalem they asked one question: Where can we find the new king of the Jews? When Herod heard this, he was enraged; he had no intention of giving up any of his power. As a result, he made a determined effort to have the young child killed, forcing His family to flee to Egypt. (You can read about this in Matthew 2.)

Herod soon died—but throughout Jesus’ ministry, some people felt threatened by His claim to be the Son of God and were determined to kill Him. In spite of His miracles and His teaching, they refused to believe in Him. They knew that if they did, they’d have to change their way of living and become His followers. They refused—and eventually they urged Pilate to condemn Him.

Although we live in a different world, the human heart has not changed. We want to run our own lives, and we don’t want to hand control over to Jesus. Like the people in one of Jesus’ parables, we bluntly declare, “We do not want this man to reign over us” (Luke 19:14b). But Christ hasn’t changed, and neither has His power to forgive us and save us. Have you given your life to Him? {eoa}

Cabinet Secretaries Reveal Major Developments With China

Following President Donald Trump’s meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week, the White House went beyond providing a simple readout of their discussions.

Instead, the president’s principal representatives in the discussions, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin and Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross briefed the press pool at Mar-a-Lago after the Chinese delegation departed Friday afternoon. What they shared were a number of major—and very positive—developments in the bilateral relationship.

Tillerson was the first to speak:

I would open by saying the president was very happy to host President Xi at Mar-a-Lago these last two days.  As those of you that have been here know, it was obviously a perfect weather day today, and it was a great opportunity for both the presidents and their wives to really get to know one another and enjoy, share meals together, and work on important issues.

Each side did bring along senior delegations of officials—so, of course, we’re represented here—who also were able to build important relationships for a lot of work that’s still ahead of us.

I think what I would really want you to get a grasp of is that both the atmosphere, the chemistry between the two leaders was positive. The posture between the two really set the tone for our subsequent meetings between our high-level delegations. And I would tell you the exchanges were very frank. They were candid, they were open, and they were very positive. So I think all of us are feeling very good about the results of this summit in terms of what it did for setting a very constructive tone going forward.

The two leaders had positive, productive meetings. President Trump and President Xi agreed to work in concert to expand areas of cooperation while managing differences based on mutual respect.

The two presidents reviewed the current state of the bilateral relationship and noted the importance of working together to generate positive outcomes that would benefit the citizens of both of our countries. President Trump noted the challenges caused by Chinese government intervention in its economy and raised serious concerns about the impact of China’s industrial, agricultural, technology and cyber policies on U.S. jobs and exports. The president underscored the need for China to take concrete steps to level the playing field for American workers, stressing repeatedly the need for reciprocal market access.

The two sides noted the urgency of the threat of North Korea’s weapons program, reaffirmed their commitment to a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, and committed to fully implement U.N. Security Council resolutions. They agreed to increase cooperation and work with the international community to convince the DPRK to peacefully resolve the issue and abandon its illicit weapons programs.

The two sides had candid discussions on regional and maritime security. President Trump noted the importance of adherence to international norms in the East and South China Seas and to previous statements on non-militarization. He also noted the importance of protecting human rights and other values deeply held by Americans.

The two presidents agreed to elevate existing bilateral talks to reflect the importance of making progress on issues. They established a new high-level framework for negotiations.  The Comprehensive Dialogue will be overseen by the two presidents, and it will have four pillars: the diplomatic and security dialogue; the comprehensive economic dialogue; the law enforcement and cybersecurity dialogue; and the social and cultures issues dialogue.

The two sides agreed to undertake an ambitious agenda and schedule to show progress and achieve meaningful results. President Trump welcomed President Xi’s invitation to visit China for a state visit at a future date. They agreed to work together in the interim to ensure successful and results-focused visits.

He then handed the briefing over to Mnuchin, who said:

I would just like to reiterate that we had a very productive two days with our counterparts. And specifically, we had a meeting this morning that was a breakout of the first comprehensive economic dialogue. We had very direct and frank conversations about how we would work together. Secretary Ross and I will be leading that jointly, and we will be focused on trade, investment, and other economic opportunities between both companies—countries.

We focused specifically on a more balanced economic relationship, specifically on trade. And we focused on the desire to have very specific action items, both in the short term for the next time we get together, as well as what the goals are over the year. So I think we think the restructuring of the dialogue and having specifically a breakout that will address comprehensive economic opportunities across our different agencies both here and within China I think we felt was very productive, very good start in how we’re going to structure it, and again, very specific things that we talked about to look forward on making progress in the short term on.

Ross then concluded the briefing with a short statement:

I think in many ways, the most significant thing was a 100-day plan. Normally, trade discussions, especially between China and ourselves, are denominated in multiple years. This was denominated in the first instance in 100 days with hopefully way stations of accomplishment along the way. Given the range of issues and the magnitude, that may be ambitious, but it’s a very big sea change in the pace of discussions. And I think that’s a very, very important symbolization of the growing rapport between the two countries. {eoa}

3 Common Ways God Speaks to You—and How He Wants You to Respond

Fairly often I encounter Christians who describe God “speaking to them.”  It is as if the Almighty actually verbalizes His unique direction right into their eardrums.  Frankly, I am skeptical.  I do not hear voices nor to do I see detached hands writing on the wall.  Yet, the Bible is clear that Christ is living and active among His people and He has commanded the churches to “hear what the Spirit is saying” (Rev. 2-3).

The Bible is prolific about the importance of hearing God’s voice—in both Old and New Testaments. Yet, how do we understand God’s pledge to speak to us without slipping into some kind of extra-biblical, subjective mysticism?  Let’s try to understand.

The Priority of Hearing God’s Voice

Throughout the Old Testament, the precursor to obedience was hearing God’s voice, most often through His commandments revealed in the divine Scripture. Dozens of times in Exodus, Deuteronomy, Joshua, and Jeremiah we find references to the voice of the Lord in connection with His revealed commandments. “You have affirmed today that the Lord is your God and vowed to walk in His ways, and to keep His statutes, and His commandments, and His judgments, and to listen to His voice” (Deut. 26:17).  In Daniel 9, the sins of God’s people are described as a failure to hear and obey God’s voice (9:10-11,14). The Psalms describe God’s voice speaking through His creation (18:13, 19:3, 29:3-9, 68:33, 77:18).

In the New Testament, Jesus announces that His sheep will hear and know His voice and follow Him (John 10:3-4, 16, 27).  He also declared that everyone who is of the truth hears His voice (John 18:37).  He predicted that day when His voice will resurrect the dead from the grave (John 5:25, 28).  In Revelation 3:2, He calls on those within the lukewarm, self-sufficient Laodicean church to hear His voice as He knocks on the door, offering restored fellowship. The book of Hebrews calls us to not harden our hearts when we hear His voice.

How Do We Hear God’s Voice?

His voice is contained in and consistent with His revealed word: Throughout the Scripture, hearing God’s voice is synonymous with obeying His commands.  The Bible is “the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3, ESV). In the closing verses of the New Testament we are warned not to add to or take away from the revealed word (Rev. 22:18-19).  The sufficiency, authority, relevance and transformational power of the Scriptures trump any individual revelation of the voice of God.

His voice is apprehended and applied by His Spirit – 1 Corinthians 2:9-12 says it so completely (read it well):

But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us by His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man, except the spirit of the man which is in him? Likewise, no one knows the things of God, except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, so that we might know the things that are freely given to us by God.”

The indwelling, all-knowing life-tutor, the Holy Spirit, gives us understanding to hear and apply the voice of God in His word.  Those who do not have the Holy Spirit do not hear or understand the instructive voice of the Holy Spirit. First Corinthians 2:14 says, “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

His voice is comprehended and confirmed among His people: The assembled church and gathered leaders in the Book of Acts heard from God as He spoke to them by the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:2, 15:28) as they waited on the Lord and sought His will. The confirmation of a community of godly believers is a necessary dimension of the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Characteristics of the Voice of God

When the Lord’s voice resounds, it is precise, powerful and penetrating.  God’s will is clear, not muddled or mysterious.  His voice brings the exactitude of His word to our hearts and minds in order to direct and confirm.  His voice is powerful.  By His command all of creation emerged and by His voice he rules over creation (see Psalm 29).  The voice of Christ was authoritative and powerful during His earthly ministry (Luke 4:26).  In Revelation, His voice is depicted as the force of “many waters” (Rev. 1:15). God’s voice is also penetrating, cutting deep into the heart and soul of man, where real change occurs (see Heb. 4:12). The mouth of the risen Christ is described as a “sharp two-edged sword” (Rev. 1:16).

Our Response to the Voice of God

We respond in obedience: The primary word associated with the idea of the voice of the Lord is “obey.” (Even a casual search in a concordance will demonstrate this convincingly).  As Mary said at the first miracle of Jesus, “Whatever He says to you, do it” (John 2:5). The defining characteristic of those who “hear from the Lord” is a life of Christ-honoring obedience, not some irregular state of emotion or braggadocio.

We respond in trust: Psalm 29 is a dramatic depiction of the many aspects of the power of the voice of the Lord.  At the end of this psalm, we find a powerful application of what it means to recognize and receive the voice of the Lord.  “The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His people with peace” (Ps. 29:11). When we hear His voice, we rely on and receive from Him as our source of strength and peace. The “peace, be still” (Mark 4:39) of Jesus’ voice is evidenced through a life of trust.

We respond in intimate surrender: The living Christ, walking among the churches, says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me”(Revelation 3:20).  This invitation to restored, intimate fellowship with Jesus requires our response of surrender as we open our hearts to His presence and Lordship.

Today . . . If You Will Hear His Voice

Our ultimate response to His voice is very clear (Ps. 95:7; Heb. 3:7, 15, 4:7).  Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.

9 More Things to Do if You Miss the Rapture

As mentioned in Part One of this article, It is possible to be a professing Christian and not actually be in the faith. I shared 11 tips people should take to heart if they miss the rapture. Here are the final pieces of counsel to survive this terrible time if you miss God’s first roundup—the rapture.

12. Do not in any way, under any circumstances, align with the world leader.

Everyone is going to love him and even worship him. But if you listen to his lies, you’ll be drawn into a strong delusion that will seal your eternal fate (2 Thess. 2:9–12). You will be soon banished to hell because you didn’t love the truth.

13. Refuse to take a mark, a name, a number or a chip in your right hand or your forehead.

Refuse any microchip injections because Revelation 13 says this powerful world leader will require everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead. But once you get it, you will belong to Satan forever. It’s better to be shut out of the world economy and lose your physical life than be damned forever to the lake of fire (Rev. 14:9–11). The life of many believers during this time of the final shabua will end in beheading for refusal to take the mark of the beast (Rev. 20:4).

14. Do not steal, do not commit any sexual sin, don’t murder anybody and don’t use drugs to ease your anxiety.

The temptation to steal, murder, use drugs and give yourself to sexual sin will be enormous, but you must resist. If you commit these sins, you may find it very difficult to repent (Rev. 9:21).

15. Pray for the Jewish people and the nation of Israel.

They’re going to be suffering to a greater degree than any other group on Earth. That’s why the final shabua is called the Tribulation and the time of Jacob’s trouble.

Jesus said it’s going to be worse for the Jewish people than anything they’ve ever experienced in the past (Matt. 24:21). Psalm 122:6a says, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.” In Zechariah 14:2, we are told that all the nations of the world will be against Israel in her final holocaust.

16. Be prepared to suffer.

At some point, liquidation camps and facilities will be operating around the clock. As I understand the prophetic warnings of the Great Tribulation, famine will be worse than ever. Families will be separated. It’s going to look like a horror movie or science fiction, but it’s real. You may have to die for your faith, but it’s worth it.

17. Do not speak evil of Israel or her people, no matter the pressure.

God will contend with you if you are contentious with Israel. False prophets will tell you that the nation Israel has no right to exist. They will tell you that the people living in Israel are not really Jews and descendants of Abraham. Never speak against Israel or her people (Gen. 12:3; Isa. 49:25).

18. If you are captured by the authorities, do not deny Jesus Christ as Lord and God.

It is better to die than deny Christ (Luke 12:8–10). In Revelation 6:9–11 we see quite a few people who died after the rapture for their faith, and they made it to heaven. If you deny Jesus Christ, you will be assigned to the dungeons of the damned to await the awful great white throne judgment (Rev. 20:11–12).

19. Mark the day the world leader moves his image into the holy temple in Jerusalem.

When that happens, you will know that you have 1,260 days to survive. Daniel refers to 1290 days, which includes thirty days of cleansing after He returns.

20. Determine to endure to the end!

If you miss the rapture, there is still hope. Moses endured much tribulation by looking to Him who is invisible (God). Paul wrote, “If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us” (2 Tim. 2:12). {eoa}

Codebreakers: God Has a Stone to Bring Down the Force From Hell

Over the weekend, House of Destiny presented a special live stream titled “Let’s Help the Children of Syria” in which they accepted donations to go toward relief efforts in the embattled Middle Eastern nation.

During the Codebreakers segment, however, Sunil Isaac discussed a prophecy the late Kim Clement shared in August of 2013 in which he said God told him He was preparing a stone for a “new generation of Davids” that would “bring down the force from hell that is coming from Russia, Syria and Iran.” Certainly, anyone who is even a little bit aware of today’s headlines knows how that word is being fulfilled before our very eyes.

What Jesus Would Do to Rescue His Bride? He Will Tell Her The Truth.

“I see you. I called you. I know you. You have been in a holy chamber being fashioned and formed. This conversion from the old into the new sometimes seems hard, and sometimes it is hard to breathe. Glimpses of glory! Keep feasting on Me. It seems lonely at times, but I’m all around. In this season, do not forsake assembling together, not under denomination disasters, but in Me. Family of God, you know Me by the Spirit. Cling to one another.

THE TRUTH ABOUT HER ENEMIES

“My character is being imparted to you! You are standing—believing the words I have spoken over you. I am doing a great separation, leading my sheep away from all the wolves. Oh, you know them. They have been making merchandise of you. I am removing you away from the false prophets who speak lies over you. My power is above every power. Stand bold. Stand strong. Fight the good fight of faith. I’m with you. Pray without ceasing. This is the time that all the prophets of old long to be a part of—this generation—but I have chosen you.”

THE TRUTH ABOUT HERSELF

“Beloved with dove’s eyes, don’t let those that have been taken captive by the lust of the flesh, pride of life, and filthy lucre deter you from Me. They will lose it all and gain Me back. Why It Might Be Time for You to Do a Thorough Book-Burning

After a meeting at the small group I attend at my home church, we were talking about an experience in churches that used to happen. Sometimes it would happen in a church parking lot. It may have come after a message on the danger of a certain kind of music. A bonfire would be created and people would come and throw their records or tapes on the fire. Someone mentioned the potential toxic fumes of such a fire.

This strange practice comes from a story in the book of Acts, chapter 19, where people came and burned their scrolls that were connected with sorcery that they were practicing. The value of the scrolls that were burned could be compared to the value of the wages of about 135 people working for an entire year. That would have been some bonfire.

It got me thinking, “What would that look like today?” Before we can figure it out, we should think about what it meant to the first people who threw the scrolls in the fire. Imagine seeing your neighbor Larry, who used to be known as a person to go to for magic, walking out of his house with an armful of scrolls that you knew were used as basically instruction manuals. It would have been the talk of the town.

These people were saying two things. First, they were publicly stating to everyone that they were done with their previous sin. Everyone would know about their new commitment to Jesus. Second, by burning the books, they were indicating there was no going back to the former life. It is kind of like the military strategy of burning the boats so there is no retreat.

The first application of what they did is pretty obvious. There is something powerful about the public confession of leaving a sin behind. This could also be a public commitment to something good as well. Confession can be freeing and empowering for the journey ahead. I know there have been times when I have made public commitments to things that freed me from that moment forward. James was right when he said confession can bring healing.

Burning the boats so there is no going back in today’s world is where it gets a little more personal. Telling everyone to burn their Christian rock records often turned into more legalism than creating freedom. That being said, there is still something powerful and freeing about creating no turning-back moments. Rather than telling you what to do, let me encourage you: Dare to ask yourself what that should look like in your life. If you ask the Holy Spirit, He will bring His creativity to encourage a life-changing moment for you.

I love what the Bible says is the end result of this kind of story. “So the word of the Lord powerfully grew and spread” (Acts 19:20) Wouldn’t it be great to see that through your life? {eoa}
