Could Congress Come Back From Recess Early?

Members of the House of Representatives may be coming back to Washington, D.C., from their current two-week Easter vacation a little early, according to a new report from Breitbart News.

Citing an exclusive interview with House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), the report states that conservatives have been working with President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, House GOP leadership, and moderates in the chamber to craft a bill to “repeal and replace” the Affordable Care Act. The new measure would have broad support within the House Republican Conference, bypassing any Democrat objections, he added.

According to the report:

Meadows, a pro-Trump conservative leader in the House who stuck with the president throughout the entire campaign, is confident that renewed negotiations—with the help of senior White House officials—with House GOP leaders and House Republican moderates is likely to produce real results in the House.

Meadows told Breitbart News on Tuesday afternoon:

I’m optimistic that we’ve at least found some potential common ground. Conservative requests and those from those that represent districts that may have a more moderate constituency don’t want to suggest anything other than the discussions have been extremely good over the last 72 hours, and the preexisting conditions that must be addressed on behalf of the president and certainly most members of our GOP conference including myself, that issue is where we’re working very diligently to make sure we cover it in the legislation but then we also cover it in a number of ways whether it be through a risk-sharing pool or through a guaranteed issue provision that’s out there. So, we still believe providing waivers at the state level from many of the Obamacare mandates that drive up costs might be a real path forward so I would say that conversations between moderates and conservatives are very constructive and it’s been due in no small part to the active involvement of the White House and leadership in trying to make sure we get a good bill—a better bill—going forward over to the Senate.

With America’s Moral Fabric Ripped to Shreds, There Is a Hope

The results of the latest State of the Bible survey by American Bible Society showed Americans overwhelmingly believe the Bible is a source of hope and a force for good even as they express growing concern for our nation’s morals. The survey also found that Americans have positive associations with the Bible and those who read it.

The annual survey for 2017 shows 81 percent of Americans say morals are declining—a 5 percent increase from 2016. Though Americans see the nation’s moral fabric decaying, they also identify the Bible as a contributor to the positive aspects of American life.

“The Bible remains a hands-down winner of hope for Americans,” said Roy Peterson, president and CEO of American Bible Society. “Those who are opening up the Word of God are discovering it to be a guide to help make sense of life and a source of eternal hope.”

Sixty-eight percent of Bible users report turning to the Bible because it brings them closer to God, while 58 percent of all Americans wish they spent more time reading or listening to the Bible. Of those who increased their Bible engagement over the last year, 39 percent did so because of a difficult life experience that caused them to seek direction or answers—an increase of 13 percent from 2016.

The report also found Americans have a positive view of people who read the Bible daily. The top three attributes ascribed to daily Bible readers are: humble (39 percent), loving (38 percent) and accepting (34 percent).

The upward trend in the number of people considered Bible skeptic seems to be leveling off: 19 percent of Americans are now considered skeptics, returning to levels last seen in 2014. Further up the engagement spectrum is Bible neutral at 23 percent, Bible friendly at 38 percent and Bible engaged at 20 percent. This year, “Bible hostile” is a new subcategory of Bible skeptics, identifying those who view the Bible as harmful. Bible hostile is at 13 percent, which leaves non-hostile Bible skeptic at 6 percent.

“While it is too early to say the decrease in Bible skepticism is a trend, we are optimistic and will continue tracking the data in the coming years to measure how the number of people who are skeptic toward the Bible changes,” said Geof Morin, executive vice president of ministry mobilization at American Bible Society. “Either way, we encourage all Americans to give the Bible a chance and read it for themselves. American Bible Society and a large majority of Americans know that reading and understanding the Bible can bring hope, peace, patience and generosity.”

President Trump’s OMB Director: ‘This Is the Centerpiece of His Administration’

Office of Budget & Management Director Mick Mulvaney briefed reporters Tuesday night on President Donald Trump’s more detailed plan to reduce the size and cost of government and to improve its efficiency.

“What kicks in tomorrow is what we call the smart hiring plan,” he said. “Right now, if you are the Department of Energy, you haven’t been able to hire anybody because of the freeze that we put in place on day one …

“But, as soon as the guidance goes out, what we expect the Department of Energy to do—along with all the other agencies—is look at that guidance and say, ‘OK, here are the president’s priorities as contained in the budget; it seems like the president wants us to beef up this particular operation at the Department of Energy and reduce our emphasis on this particular department—or organization within the Department of Energy.’ So they would hire more over here and fewer over here.

“So what the guidance really does is tell them, look to the budget blueprint and fashion your hiring and the paring down of your workforce consistent with the budget.”

The following is his whole statement about the new Smart Hiring Plan:

Tomorrow, in the morning, we will be releasing our guidance related to the executive order on the government restructuring. Why should anybody care about that? This marks a couple of different things.

First of all, it’s a major accomplishment for the administration in the first 100 days. It’s something we said we were going to do on Day One, and we’re following through well within the end of the 100-day period. More immediately, perhaps, the government hiring freeze will end with the release of this guidance. That does not mean—and I’ve made this very clear to all of the agency heads, the deputy chiefs, and so on, for the last couple of days—that does not mean that the agencies will be free to hire willy-nilly.

What we’re doing tomorrow is replacing the across-the-board hiring freeze that we put into place on day one in office, and replacing it with a smarter plan, a more strategic plan, a more surgical plan. And what that means specifically is that, consistent with the president’s priorities in the budget, certain agencies will end up hiring more people. Other agencies will end up paring their FTEs even greater than they would have had during the hiring freeze.

So we’re going from this sort of across-the-board hiring freeze. That’s not unusual for any new management team to come in—to put into place when they come into an organization, whether it’s the private sector or a government. Not unusual for a new management team to come in and say, look, stop hiring, let us figure out what’s going on, we’ll get acclimated and then we’ll put into place something that’s more practicable and smarter. And that’s what this is. So you’ll see this across-the-board ban tomorrow and replaced with a smarter approach.

To the larger issue, the government reorg is probably the biggest story that nobody is talking about. Yes, we talk about health care; yes, we talk about taxes; yes, we talk about infrastructure—and all of those are extraordinarily critical to rebuilding the country, making America great again, as the president has said. This is something that goes much deeper and to the very structure of government.

This is trying to do something that has never been done before. The executive branch of government has never been rebuilt. It has grown organically over the course of the last 240 years, and the president of the United States has asked all of us in the executive branch to start from scratch, a literal blank piece of paper and say, if you’re going to rebuild the executive branch, what would it look like.

One of the things we’re doing for the first time ever, we think, is soliciting a lot of input from outside. You go to the website, the website and see a—what I’m told is not a completely terrible—I thought it was awful—video that I made on there, soliciting input from individuals—like to say, look, if you’ve had a contact with a federal government that you think could go better, tell us about it. If you’re an academic and you’ve got an idea on how to fix the government, tell us how to do it, give us the ideas. So we’ve got a website set up for that.

We met this morning with CEOs from all across the nation and said, look, we’re trying to do something that’s never been done, we’re trying to rebuild the executive branch of government, give us some ideas. By the way, they did. And one of the ideas I took away from that meeting this morning was a suggestion from the group of business leaders that says, look, why don’t you restructure the government in terms of the functions that it performs. Instead of following some organically created guidelines over the course of the last two centuries or instead of following the 12 appropriations committees on the Hill, go and look at the functions.

Does the government want to be in the business of trade? OK, then let’s go find all of the functions of government that deal with trade and put it in one place. The best example I can think of is workforce training, and the number I have—always stuck in my head—is we have 43 different workforce training programs spread across at least 13 different agencies.

Now, there’s a rule in the private sector which is that if everybody is responsible, nobody is responsible. And that’s what we face right now all too often in the executive branch. If the President, for example, wants to know why the federal government workforce training programs aren’t functioning as best as they possibly can, there’s no one person he can turn to and say, why is that, and shouldn’t we be able to fix that. And that’s one of the things that we’ll be looking for.

We think at the end of the day this leads to a government that is dramatically more accountable, dramatically more efficient, and dramatically more effective, following through on the very promises the President made during the campaign and that he put into place on day one …

We’ve gone out to the agencies with this and say, why don’t you, by the way, you give you your ideas on how you can improve your agency. If you’ve always had an idea why NASA should be in the Department of Agriculture, now is your time to speak up. Okay, this is a blank piece of paper, and we ask all the agencies to come back to us. So between June and September, we’ll be collecting that data from the agencies. And then, in September, we’ll be starting to go back to the President and say, look, here are some of the ideas with a goal towards putting these things into place roughly 11 months from today.

After making his statement, Mulvaney took a few questions from the media. During that Q&A, he was asked how this plays into the president’s “drain the swamp” plans, as well as how the president intends to succeed where others—including presidents Reagan and Clinton—had failed.

“This is really important to the president,” he said. “I wasn’t around the Clinton administration, I don’t remember the Reagan administration, but I can tell you that this is a big part of draining the swamp. We focus on things like getting lobbyists out of the process, and the five-year ban, and all that—and that’s certainly part of the draining the swamp—but really what you’re talking about doing is restructuring Washington, D.C., and that is how you drain the swamp.

“So the president uses different words. He doesn’t use the words ‘restructuring government,’ ‘reorganizing government,’ he uses the words ‘drain the swamp.’ But that’s what this is. So this is a centerpiece of his campaign and a centerpiece of his administration.” {eoa}

Christian Politician Presents Easter Message in the Middle of Government Meeting

A Canadian politician received a standing ovation last week after he shared the gospel in the Canadian Parliament.

Speaking about freedom of religion, Christian MP Ted Falk highlighted the important role of Judeo-Christian values in the formation of the country.

He then spoke of how this weekend Christians will celebrate Easter, the time when “God’s love ran red, and he sent his only Son to be crucified to pay the price for our sins.”

‘Living Savior’

He continued: “The really good news is; the cross couldn’t hold him, the tomb is empty, we serve a living Savior, and he’s coming back again.”

He concluded by wishing the Speaker, the House and all Canadians a “happy and blessed Easter.”

During his brief statement, Falk explained that it is because of Judeo-Christian values that freedom of religion and freedom to express one’s faith exists in Canada.

Sanctity of Life

He said: “Freedom of religion is the cornerstone of democratic societies.

“One of the things that makes Canada so great is the freedom we enjoy to follow our consciences and to live out our faiths in a diverse society,” he added.

Falk has previously spoken up in the Canadian Parliament against assisted suicide, stating that he believes in the sanctity of life “from conception to natural death.”

Conscientious Objection

He also petitioned in favor of protecting freedom of conscience for doctors who do not wish to perform physician-assisted suicide.

Last year, he refused to attend a Gay Pride march due to his religious beliefs and called on others to respect his right not to attend. {eoa}

The Apostle Paul’s Advice for Thriving at Your Job

 My conclusion at the end of spring break: I am … different.

Partly I know this because of the look on my brother’s face when he found out I was listening to Grit: The Power of Passion And Perseverance, by Angela Duckworth on my 12-hour drive to our mom’s house.

“No,” he said. “You should be listening to something fun. You’re on vacation.”

“This is fun,” I said. “I like to learn and think and be challenged.”

Eye roll.

Then there was my niece, who needed to practice her speech on a live audience. So I listened, and I gave feedback. While I was talking to her, my heart picked up speed, and I sat forward in my chair.

“This is so fun,” I thought. “Now this is vacation.”

And also, I know I am different because I have Spanish flashcards by the toothpaste in the bathroom.

This is me, and I rarely do well at pretending I’m like all you normal folks, because of course I think the rest of you must be normal and I am the odd duck.

Teaching is the thing for me. Teaching in front of a class. Teaching one-on-one. Teaching with words on paper. Learning for myself so that I’m equipped to teach others. Thinking about lesson plans at 3:00 a.m. Practicing Spanish explanations in the car on my way to work. Scratching Bible study ideas on the nearest notebook. Throwing pens away because I keep running them out of ink.

So I want to hug Paul when I hear him say, “Whatever you do … “

Whatever.

Whatever is your thing. Whatever your task.

Whatever you do as a servant.

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Col. 3:23).

I know Paul is talking to slaves about having an excellent work ethic, whether they’re being watched or not being watched, and I just love that he doesn’t know exactly what they’ll be doing. One servant’s job will be different than another’s job.

“Whatever it is for you –do it with everything you’ve got,” he tells them.

Sit up. Open your eyes wide. Exert full energy. Push for excellence. Refuse to give up even when it’s hard. Put in overtime. Find ways to improve.

Grit, just like Angela talks about on my nerdy audiobook.

Do whatever work God has put in front of you (probably different work than what he has me doing) with grit, as though you’re doing it for the Lord and not for anyone else. {eoa}

These Miraculous Events Prove the Perfect Unity of the Trinity

This weekend, many people celebrate Easter, which is the time of year that Christians are to pause and reflect on the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Even though we deserved the punishment due to our sin, as Scripture reveals, Jesus took our place and forgave our sins from the cross. He was buried in a tomb and then the unexplainable happened—He rose from the dead!

On the third day after the crucifixion, Matthew 28:1-2 says, “At the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And then there was a great earthquake. For the angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat on it.”

Then, in verse 5, the angel says, “”Do not be afraid. For I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.” Then the angel instructed them (v. 7) to tell the disciples that Jesus rose from the dead. They departed quickly, “with fear and great joy” (v. 8) to tell the amazing news, and they encountered the Risen Christ!

There were probably many thoughts running through the minds of these ladies who were sent from the tomb to go tell the disciples the great news, as they were overcome with excitement and emotion. A question that has been asked through the centuries is “Who raised Jesus from dead?” And the Bible gives us these answers.

Scripture shows that:

  1. God the Father raised Jesus from the dead. The Apostle Paul said in Romans 6:4, “Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Also, our personal salvation hinges on confessing with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believing in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead” (Rom. 10:9).
  2. God the Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead. Romans 8:11 says, “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit that lives in you.”
  3. God the Son raised Himself from the dead. In the Gospel of John, 10:17-18, Jesus told His disciples, “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I received this command from My Father.”

These were incredible and miraculous events that has shaped the course of history since. No other event or person in history has affected the world like Jesus and the events surrounding His birth, life, death and resurrection.

The participation of the Trinity in the resurrection of Jesus is truly miraculous and awe-inspiring. It reveals the unity of God, and how each person of the Trinity works together, being equal in divine perfection and attribute. They complemented one another’s roles in raising Jesus from the dead (Open Bible Core Beliefs). And this is part of what we celebrate this weekend. Please reflect on this truth and marvel in its mystery as together we celebrate our Lord and Savior. {eoa}

This No-Nonsense Method Crushes Your Nagging Addictions

Everyone has their own journey down the river of growth and change. Many of us have rapids to overcome—otherwise known as behaviors that we just can’t seem to get control over. For some of you, the behavior may be rage; for others, it’s complacency, apathy or even addictions to work, food or exercise.

As human beings, we are all so very different. We have all traveled from a different past. Some of us had pain along the way that has anchored our raft in the rapids of our out of control behaviors. It’s as if we paddle but are trapped by a rock that needs to be lifted so we can paddle out and into the more peaceful parts of the river.

Some of us have been overturned on our boat and are swimming alone in the cold waters. For these individuals, it takes gathering a team and flipping the boat back over so that they can move further safely down the river. After this takes place, the view and experience of life is much better.

There are others who end up just getting turned around. They’ve paddled so hard and long, but actually it seems as though they are still in the same place. For them, getting a clear location on what they need to address can by the key.

Regardless of how badly you may be stuck, you can get a grip and permanently get control over what has been controlling you.

I have personally experienced new freedom that I thought I would never have. I remember pleading and begging God sometimes over a several-year period of time to help me get and stay free from behaviors that had a grip over me.

Now I no longer only see the tears of sorrow from those trapped, but now see the tears of joy from those who have been set free. They are free from that nagging behavior that has controlled them for years.

You absolutely deserve this freedom! Like everyone else who has received this freedom, there is work involved. Don’t get discouraged and don’t ever get into the heart of “Oh, I have to do this or that.” No, not at all! Stay in the heart of “I get to do this in order to get free, to stay free and to give freedom away to others that are struggling.”  You are going to be trained, not just to get free but also to teach freedom. Take this course that is before you with joy.

Everyone who has built anything knows that there is work ahead of them. It may not necessarily be that you will whistle as you work, but please enjoy the fact that you have been chosen to do the work. For me, knowing that I was chosen to break down the chains that have kept my family enslaved for many generations along with many others was inspirational. I thought I was disqualified by God and that he couldn’t possibly use me in any significant way because of all the pain I was put through even before adulthood. Boy, was I wrong.

I had to go through the “get a grip” process. I had to look at some ugly stuff and do some work. But today it was so worth that season of my life. Today, as the author of almost 30 books, having had an international television show, two made-for-television movies about my practice and many media appearances; I know that God can still use me in unimaginable ways. I have also been married (in a deeply connected way) to a great woman for more than 30 years. I have great friends and co-laborers at my office and life is good.

Get a Grip is a healing process, not a magic word. I have met many people who desire a magic potion, a precise prayer or a person who, with one touch of their hand, could stop this behavior from ravaging their life. As Christians, we often want the quick and immediate fix to our troubled situation. Unfortunately, God is not an American. He can instantly do anything, but often will allow us to go through a process instead. “Why?” you might ask. I really can’t say that I know the exact reason, but I can give you a good guess.

My guess is that God really does love us and has an agenda for all of us to look more like Him. If He always instantly did everything for us, we would not develop some of His character in us.

God ultimately wants us to look like Him. He can allow us to stay in our condition until we learn to follow some basic biblical principles. As for me, He wanted me to learn to be really honest all the time. I was stuck with an unwanted behavior until I was willing to be transparent about my really yucky condition. When I agreed to follow a process of intense honesty, it was then that I became free. Days, then weeks went by then years and decades of freedom because I was willing to develop the character of honesty. In God’s eyes, I believe that this character trait was worth the journey that it took me to get a grip in this area of my life. My hope is that you can find the freedom you deserve. {eoa}

You’ll Never Believe Who’s Making a Political Comeback

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s political career was supposed to be over after he fell out of favor with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the end of his second term in 2013.

Ahmadinejad, who had brought Iran to the brink of war with the U.S. over its nuclear weapons program, was publicly humiliated by Khamenei in a rift over domestic policy, and was ordered just last year to never run for the presidency again. But, on Tuesday, the firebrand “conservative” leader announced he was, in fact, running for the presidency in a move that Iranian political observers called “an organized mutiny against Iran’s ruling system.”

“[Khahmenei]’s advice does not prevent me from running,” he told Iranian media. “There is extensive pressure on me from dear people of different walks of life as their small servant to come to the election.”

Under Iran’s electoral system, all applicants to run for political office must be vetted by the nation’s Guardian Council. That clerical body is expected to announce a final list of candidates on or before April 27 ahead of the May 19 election.

The registration process remains open through Saturday. So far, more than 120 candidates have submitted their names, including six women and seven clerics. Registration remains open until Saturday. The Guardian Council typically does not approve dissidents or women for the official candidate list.

The election was supposed to be a national referendum on the nuclear agreement with the U.S., but with little improvement seen in the lives of many everyday Iranians, it could become a referendum on their entire form of government. Ahmadinejad’s appearance on the ballot will certainly complicate matters, particularly for “reformist” President Hassan Rouhani, the supposed “moderate” leader who’s government negotiated the nuclear deal.

A return to a more hard-line government, despite the Supreme Leader’s attempt to prevent it, could signal trouble for the U.S., Israel, and the entire Middle East. {eoa}

‘Bible Answer Man’ Hank Hanegraaff Leaves Evangelical Church

Hank Hanegraaff left the evangelical stream in favor of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Hanegraaff, who hosts the Bible Answer Man radio show, was confirmed into the church Sunday.

“I am now a member of an Orthodox church, but nothing has changed in my faith,” Hanegraaff said during his radio program. “I have been attending an Orthodox church for a long time—for over two years, really, as a result of what happened when I went to China many years ago.”

Eastern Orthodoxy is one of the three major doctrinal and jurisdictional groups of Christianity characterized by its continuity with the apostolic church, its liturgy and its territorial churches. Most members live mainly in the Balkans, the Middle East, and former Soviet countries, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica

Though some listeners accuse Hanegraaff of heresy, but he says his Chrismation is just a further deepening of his faith.

“In the present, just as the Eastern Orthodox Church has been impacted by our ministry, I’ve been impacted by Eastern Orthodox people who have a very keen sense of church history and have absolute fidelity to the essentials of the historic Christian faith. And so, this is all part of championing mere Christianity and learning,” Hanegraaff said.

This Short Prayer Is Exactly What You Need When Facing a Serious Health Crisis

Everyone will face a moment of crisis, a midnight hour, at some point in his or her life. For some, the moment comes sooner than for others, but rest assured, your moment will come. What will happen at that time? Will you know what to do? Will you know how to pray?

When many of my patients are faced with serious health crises, they don’t know what to do or how to pray effectively. They haven’t been prepared for this dark moment. Fortunately God, in His wisdom and providence, has given us in His Word the answers we need for all of life’s situations. When my patients ask me to help them pray, I happily show them what the Bible teaches. In fact, Jesus’s disciples asked Him the very question that my patients ask me. They had seen their master’s prayer life—the many times that He would retreat to be alone with His Father and pray, sometimes all night— and they saw the power and effectiveness with which He healed the masses.

For that reason, they came to Him one day, entreating Him, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1b). Jesus provided them with the pattern of prayer that we still use today called the Lord’s Prayer. I believe that Jesus gave this prayer to the disciples—and to us today—not only for us to memorize and recite, but also to teach us the basic principles of prayer.

This simple prayer embodies certain fundamentals that we should understand and apply to all our prayers. As we focus briefly on these important aspects of effective prayer, I encourage you to begin to use them in your prayers with renewed faith.

“Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name” (Matt. 6:9). We must begin our prayer by acknowledging God as our Father. In His great love, He is our provider, the one who knows us and knows what we need and what is best for us. He is interested in our welfare and is lovingly approachable to His children at any time.

“Your kingdom come; Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven” (v. 10,). As the ultimate “higher power,” God’s kingdom supersedes—and overrides—all earthly governments. As we learn to recognize that His will is always good, we seek to follow Him always and desire His direction for our lives.

“Give us this day our daily bread” (v. 11). God is the source for everything we need in our lives on a daily basis. We should ask Him specifically to provide for our needs—including health and healing for every part of our being.

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (v. 12). The word “debts” is sometimes translated as “transgressions” or “trespasses.” God’s perfection can obliterate our imperfections, His wisdom far exceeds ours, and His divine mercy and grace are able to save to the uttermost when we seek forgiveness for our sins. It is important to remember that we are forgiven when we forgive others (see Matt. 6:14–15.)

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (v. 13). There is evil as well as good in the world, and there are things that we may be tempted to do (such as smoking, drinking excessively or having gluttonous eating habits) that could adversely affect our health and our ability to ward off disease. Only with God’s active help that we entreat through prayer can we overcome the many pitfalls, problems, temptations and opposition that we will inevitably confront.

“For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen” (v. 13). Our success in prayer, in our lives and in our health will depend on us understanding and remembering who God is, what He asks of us and how we cultivate relationship with Him.

With this guidance received from Jesus’s example, it seems easier to understand how God wants you to pray.

As a Christian physician, I can tell you that my primary weapon against disease is prayer. When I see patients who are ravaged by the effects of a particular illness— or even worse, their test results and case history are inconclusive so that we are not sure what is causing the symptoms—I do not turn first to further testing or to my prescription pad. I turn to what I consider to be the Bible’s greatest health secret: the effective weapon of prayer. {eoa}
