Waking Up to Iran

Christians Ask UN to Indict Iranian PresidentIn recent weeks, the world seems to have finally awakened to the true nature of Iran’s Islamic regime. First, Iran’s leaders appear to have stolen a presidential election on behalf of their preferred candidate, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Then they brutally cracked down on those who protested the theft.

Rather than admit that the protests are an expression of Iranian dissent, these leaders have made the absurd claim that foreign agitators, primarily British, are responsible.

Finally, a young woman named Neda Agha-Soltan was shot and killed while observing the protests last week. As beautiful Neda died—her terrible final moments captured on video—the world’s illusions about Iran seemed to die with her.

It is good that the world finally recognizes the true nature of Iran’s regime. But it is simply inexplicable—and inexcusable—that it took so long for the world to wake up. While Neda’s death is indeed tragic, she is hardly the Islamic Republic’s first victim.

The hands of Iran mullah’s drip with blood. The fact that much of this blood is Jewish and American should not make it any less meaningful, or any less shocking.

As we all know, Iran funds, trains and arms the two terrorist groups most committed to Israel’s destruction, Hezbollah and Hamas. Iranian support enabled Hezbollah to attack Israel in July 2006 and force over 350,000 Israelis to flee their homes as Iranian-supplied missiles rained down on Israel’s northern cities (and killed over 40 Israelis).

The Iranians have since rearmed Hezbollah with missiles that can reach almost all of Israel’s major population centers. Iran has also been Hamas’ main external source of support and has enabled and encouraged Hamas attacks on Israel. Iran is now making every effort to supply Hamas with long range missiles that can reach Tel Aviv.

Of course, Iran has hardly limited its violence to citizens of the Jewish state.

Iranian-backed Hezbollah is widely believed to have been responsible for the 1983 bombing of our marine barracks in Beirut, which killed 299 American soldiers. On May 30, 2003, Judge Royce Lamberth of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, found Iran legally responsible for providing Hezbollah with financial and logistical support that helped them carry out this attack.

Likewise, Iran’s Hezbollah proxies have been linked to the 1996 attacks on the Khobar Towers barracks in Saudi Arabia, which killed 19 U.S. soldiers. More recently, our government has linked Iran to the Iraqi insurgents who have killed U.S. troops in Iraq.

In July 1994, the Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was bombed, killing 85 people and injuring hundreds. Most of the victims were Argentinean Jews. On October 25, 2006, Argentine prosecutors formally accused the government of Iran of directing the bombing, and Hezbollah of carrying it out. It is for these reasons and many others that the U.S. State Department has repeatedly labeled Iran the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.

Those who have suffered most under Iran’s regime, of course, are the Iranian people themselves. During the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980’s, thousands of Iranian boys and teenagers lost their lives after they were forced to run into Iraqi minefields and machine gun fire in repeated “human waves” until a path was cleared for tanks to advance.

Thousands of Iranians have been arrested, beaten and even executed for their political views. Members of Iran’s Jewish community have been falsely accused of spying for Israel, Iran’s Bahai community faces terrible persecution, and Iranian teenagers have been hung for being homosexuals.

Despite this long record of terror and bloodshed, much of the world and even our own administration continue to view Iran as a legitimate regime, one that can be reasoned with. For some reason, it took an Iranian clamp down on its own people to penetrate the world’s complacency about Iran in a way that this prior record could not. Better late than never.

But this reality raises a concern. Will the world’s recognition of the Islamic regime’s true nature be as short lived as it has been belated? When the shock of Neda’s death fades, will the world remember her and the thousands of other victims of this regime whose violent deaths were never caught on tape?

When Ahmadinejad claims that he wants nuclear power for peaceful purposes, will the world remember his lies about this election and about the protests that followed? We hope the world will remember. But we must do everything in our power to remind all who will listen of these facts lest they forget.

Michael Jackson Salvation Reports ‘Not True,’ Pastors Say

Pentecostal pastors Andraé and Sandra Crouch say recent reports that they led pop singer Michael Jackson to Christ three weeks before his sudden death Thursday are false.

In a posting on her Facebook page, Sandra Crouch, who with her brother, Andraé, leads Christ Memorial Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles, said reports that she and her brother met with Jackson and led him in the sinner’s prayer are “incorrect and absolutely not true.”

“We recently met with Michael to discuss recording two songs with our choir for his newest recording project,” Sandra Crouch wrote in a statement signed by both Crouches. “Michael always had a respect and curiosity for spiritual things. During our meeting, not unlike many other creative/music meetings we’ve had with him the past, we sang together, prayed together and had a wonderful time.”

Reports that Jackson sought prayer from the legendary gospel musicians began circulating Friday after the contemporary gospel duo Mary Mary posted a message they received from an associate of the Crouches on their Facebook page. “Michael asked Andraé to play ‘It Won’t Be Long and We’ll Be Leaving Here,'” the posting read. “Michael then prayed with Sandra and [Andraé] and accepted Christ into his heart. Now he’s singing in the heavenly choir! Our hearts rejoice!”

A representative from Christ Memorial would not confirm or deny the accuracy of a separate posting on Andraé Crouch’s Facebook page claiming that Jackson requested prayer “concerning the anointing of the Holy Spirit, and how he could make his music more ‘spiritual'” during a meeting with the Crouches roughly three weeks ago.

Dave Nassaney, Andraé Crouch’s Facebook page administrator, wrote that Andraé and Sandra Crouch told Jackson about the anointing and about Jesus. “He wanted to know what makes your hands go up, and makes you ‘come out of yourself’ and what gives a ‘spirituality’ to the music,” Nassaney wrote. “He then requested to hear his favorite song that he loves, and wanted [them] to sing to him, so they sang that song to him, and joined hands and sang together, and he said, ‘It was beautiful.'”

Nassaney said Crouch told him Jackson “definitely had an ‘encounter'” during the visit, but it remained unclear whether the pop icon accepted Christ. Jackson was raised a Jehovah’s Witness and reportedly converted to Islam in 2008.

“He did NOT reject Jesus or the prayer when they prayed, and gladly joined in prayer,” Crouch said, according to Nassaney’s post. “He usually doesn’t touch anybody, but he touched them, and held their hands in a circle as they sang and prayed.

“There was NO actual ‘sinners prayer,’ however, but they did talk and pray about Jesus and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. They also told him, “Michael, we consider you as our son,” and he said, “Yes, yes, yes,” and [Jackson] gave him his latest music on a CD, and he told him, “Andraé I trust you with this,” and gave him CDs of two songs-unpublished, beautiful music.”

Sandra Crouch said she and her brother are praying for the Jackson family. “We loved and respected Michael enormously and we’ve been friends with him for many, many years, and are deeply saddened by his sudden and tragic death,” she wrote.

“We are praying for Michael’s family and desire nothing less than God’s best for them,” she added.

Rally Targets Emerging Generation of Pro-Lifers

A new generation of pro-life activists is rallying Tuesday in Southern California to “build a culture of life” during President Obama’s pro-choice administration.

Hosted by Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, an organization that mobilizes pro-life youth activism, the Southern California Rally for Life beings at 7 p.m. at New Beginnings Community Church in Norco, Calif., and is part of Survivors’ weeklong training camp for young pro-lifers.

“The Survivors are taking an active stand on behalf of those who have already been lost, and for those who are scheduled to die through abortion,” the group said on its Web site. “We are empowered by the truth, enabled by extensive training, and unafraid of condemning the death of innocents.”

The California-based organization considers those born after Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in 1973 “survivors.”

The Tuesday rally will feature the Rev. Patrick Mahoney, president of the Christian Defense Coalition, along with Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, and Walter B. Hoye II, a pastor who spent 19 days in jail after picketing an Oakland, Calif., abortion clinic.

Earlier on Tuesday, the roughly 65 young activists were to gather outside California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s office to demand that taxpayer funds not be used for abortions at a time when the state faces severe budget shortfalls. The protest was to kick off Survivors’ national “Teachers Not Abortions” campaign.

I’ve never been more optimistic about ending abortion than today, and that’s because of the passion of this emerging generation,” Mahoney said. “Every survey shows that the youth of America are embracing the culture of life.”

Pro-life leaders say youth are likely one reason a May Gallup Poll found that 51 percent of Americans consider themselves pro-life. “That boost we got in the Gallup Poll really is from the youth,” said Hoye, founder of Issues4Life.

“The youth don’t have any problem wrestling with the truth. … They like to look at the data for themselves and make up their minds, and the truth about abortion is overwhelmingly pro-life.”

Hoye, who also will speak at the rally Tuesday, spent 19 days in jail for violating an Oakland, Calif., ordinance that prohibited him from standing on a sidewalk outside an abortion clinic with a sign that read, “Jesus loves you and your baby, let us help you.”

On Friday, Hoye and his attorneys were in court challenging the constitutionality of the ordinance, which bars picketers from coming within 8 feet of women entering an abortion clinic.

In late July, he is scheduled to appear before Alameda County Superior Court Judge Stuart Hing, who will decide whether to prohibit Hoye from going within 100 yards of an abortion clinic. Hoye accepted jail time instead of probation because it included the stay-away order.

At the rally Tuesday, Hoye said he plans to explain the six principles of nonviolent social change laid down by Martin Luther King Jr., and challenge the youth to count the cost of their pro-life activism.

Mahoney said youth are passionate about pro-life activism, but have their own methods for spreading their message.

“It’s important for them to find their own creative ways to deal with [abortion], and we don’t put our strategies or our tactics that we did 30 years ago on them,” Mahoney said. “This emerging generation is much more into conversation, is much more into dialogue, obviously communicating through the Internet and taking a less direct approach but still as passionate approach.”

Presley Crowe, a 17-year-old high school student from Santa Rosa, Calif., learned about the pro-life training camp through Facebook. She said her pro-life activism began about two years ago, and her motivation was deeply personal. She said her older sister is a product of date rape and she has two adopted siblings from China, one of whom is missing a leg and has some hand deformities.

“A lot of the pro-choice argument are people who would be born with disabilities or are from these situations don’t deserve to live, so seeing these arguments kind of motivated me even more to get involved,” she said.

Although her generation has never known life without abortion, Crowe believes Roe v. Wade could be overturned one day. “If you had asked me a year or two ago, I probably would have said there’s no way anyone in my generation would support [overturning Roe v. Wade],” she said.

“But as I’m getting older, I realize that a lot of people around my age, they say they’re pro-abortion but when you give them the facts and statistics and really inform them on things, they understand what it is and they see that it’s murder. I think if we got more information out there, my generation would support overturning Roe V. Wade.”

Amaris Gonzalez, 17, said she first saw graphic photos of abortion through her Christian school. “It made me really disgusted,” she said. “So ever since then I’ve been really on fire about [the pro-life movement].”

Gonzalez said she’s been inspired to ramp up her own activism, particularly by educating her peers about abortion. “Of course, our goal as always is to change the laws,” she said. “But the way we’re trying to do that is informing people little by little. So we’re saving babies, but we’re also informing people who are not necessarily pregnant so they can vote against [abortion].”

Even though the president is pro-choice, Gonzalez said Obama’s abortion talk has helped heighten her generation’s awareness of the issue.

“I think since Obama has become president, a lot of people are examining the issue on abortion,” she said. “And I’ve actually noticed that a lot of my friends are switching to the pro-life side. … He’s definitely brought it to people’s attention even more.”

Did Obama Edit History?

Even four weeks later, President Barak Obama’s Cairo speech is still reverberating in Washington, D.C. To his credit, the president used the speech to shatter an ugly myth when he confronted Holocaust denial.

But unfortunately, President Obama’s speech actually reinforced other dangerous myths about Israel’s history and the true obstacles to peace in the Middle East.

Last Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stepped up to set the record straight. And last week, two Democratic senators—Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada and Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey—added their voices to the chorus of correction. Taking on a popular president from your own party is never easy. It is therefore of great significance that these two Democrats felt the need to clarify that when it comes to the specifics of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the president does not speak for the party.

Nearly two weeks ago, Democratic Majority Leader Sen. Reid, sent a letter to President Obama. Reid politely reminded the president of the real threats to peace in the Middle East. In Cairo, President Obama glossed over the long history of Palestinian rejection of Israel’s right to exist. Sen. Reid wrote, “I believe that negotiations will be successful only with a renewed commitment from the Palestinians to be a true partner for peace.”

In Cairo, President Obama largely ignored the leading role of Iran in fueling the conflict with Israel. Sen. Reid wrote that the peace process must not “take away from your commitment to deal with the ongoing threat from Iran. Iran has continued to call for Israel’s destruction while repeatedly defying the international community with its nuclear program.”

The following day, Sen. Menendez went to the floor of the Senate to deliver a 13-minute speech on Israel. While not mentioning President Obama by name, he issued a powerful rebuttal of the myths that the president seemed to embrace. In Cairo, the president suggested that Israel’s right to exist is based upon Jewish suffering in the Holocaust.

In response, Sen. Menendez walked through the over 3,500-year-old connection between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel. “Let’s be very clear,” Menendez stated, “the Holocaust is not the main justification for Israel’s existence.”

While in Cairo, President Obama stated that Palestinian “dislocation” was a result of “Israel’s founding.” Sen. Menendez noted that, “the more than 700,000 Palestinians who left Israel were refugees of a war instigated by Arab governments bent on seizing more land for themselves. ” Sen. Menendez also mentioned that 750,000 Jewish refugees from Arab countries were absorbed by Israel, a fact absent from the president’s speech.

While the president downplayed the threat from Iran, Menendez highlighted it. Iran, he stressed, is not a just a “potential threat” to Israel’s existence—it is a present threat to Israel’s existence though its arming and funding of Hamas and Hezbollah. Sen. Menendez was clear that “under no circumstances whatsoever can we allow that conventional threat to become a nuclear one.”

We live in a time when Israel’s enemies are aggressively seeking to delegitimize her by rewriting both the history of the Jewish people and the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. In such a climate, even people sympathetic to Israel are sometimes swayed. It is thus good indeed to see Israel’s friends on both sides of the aisle step up and correct the record. Thank you, Sen. Reid and Sen. Menendez, for your leadership and your friendship on this issue. Your services to the truth and to Israel are deeply appreciated.

The Brown Sisters: Displaying God’s Love

The Brown Sisters have been singing together for more than 20 years. Well-known in their home city of Chicago, they’ve shared the stage with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Bobby McFerrin and Mavis Staples. For the last 12 years they’ve traveled throughout Europe singing at concerts and festivals, and have continued to perform as backup singers in the United States. The sisters decided that now was the right time for them to release their own CD, The Brown Sisters Live in Chicago.

What prompted this quintet to finally step out on their own with an album? Eldest sister Vanessa Brown Dukes says it was a simple desire to sing God’s praises and to offer songs with positive messages that will uplift and deliver people during these tough times. That sense of hope rings throughout the album, on which four of the five sisters collaborated with other writers for songs that declare God as an “Awesome God” and the “King of Glory.”

“You Reign Lord,” Dukes says, “talks about how our God reigns in every situation, over sickness, death, poverty, any kind of depression, any kind of situation you find yourself in He reigns in these situations.” Capturing the essence of live recordings, the song ends with the sisters testifying about how God brought their mother back from death’s door. “It’s a real powerful testimony about what God is doing, and that we serve a God who is able,” Dukes says.

The Brown Sisters know part of their calling as a group is to walk in unity and love. Yet it’s their obvious affection and respect for one another that often garners the most attention from those who meet them for the first time. “We want to display God’s love in our music and in our ministry,” Dukes explains. “You have so much hatred going around. … We just really want to display the love of God.”

Because of the highs and lows that they’ve experienced as a family, the sisters have held onto Ephesians 3:20: “Now unto Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.”

“He is doing it right now,” Dukes says, referring to the new album, which releases today and features a variety of musical styles. “We have a little upbeat, we have a little worship, we have a little calypso, we have a little Latin flavor. … We’ve got the down-home churchy feel. We’ve got a lot of stuff on there. You won’t be bored, I can tell you that much,” she says with a chuckle.

The Charismatic Movement: Dead or Alive?

We can quibble over when the previous wave of the Holy Spirit ended. But what’s important is that we follow God’s presence into a new season.

Some readers were offended when I declared in an online column a few weeks ago that the charismatic movement is dead. One woman even accused me of heresy, since—in her words—I believe “the age of the Holy Spirit has ended.” (I didn’t say that.) Others on the opposite side of the spectrum asked why I waited so long to state the obvious. All this discussion prompted me to address the issue further.

I am not a coroner. But I do believe the historic period we call the American charismatic movement ended a while ago. By making that pronouncement I was NOT saying that (1) the Holy Spirit isn’t moving today; (2) the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit aren’t available to us any more; or (3) people who are associated with this movement are all washed up.

Rather than worshiping God around a monument to the past, let’s find out where He’s going and follow the glory cloud.

On the contrary, we could be on the cusp of one of the most dynamic spiritual awakenings in history, and it will most certainly be accompanied by the supernatural work of the Spirit. Yet if we want to shift with Him into the next season we must lay aside old mindsets and worn-out religious paradigms that we picked up during the past 40 years. When God comes to do “a new thing,” as Isaiah promised He would (Isa. 43:19, NASB), we must embrace new priorities, recalibrate our spiritual values and set aside the baggage of the past.

New wine requires new wineskins. New growth only comes after pruning. Change is often painful.

The history books will record that the charismatic movement began in 1967 with the Duquesne revival in Pittsburgh (there were earlier birth pangs with Episcopalians in the late 1950s) and that the movement waned by the late 1980s. Charismatic renewal was a visitation of God—ushering millions of people from mainline church backgrounds into an experience with the Holy Spirit and renewing many older Pentecostal churches.

There were subsequent outpourings of the Spirit in the 1990s, of course—namely the Toronto Blessing and the Pensacola Revival—but the overall movement was fragmenting. The televangelism scandals of 1987 and the implosion of the Discipleship Movement two years later made it obvious that something was rotten underneath the polished veneer of charismania.

This doesn’t mean the past 20 years have been insignificant. Huge advances have occurred on the international mission field. Yet some of the most notable spiritual trends in the United States in recent years have been associated with evangelicals who don’t have ties to charismatics. These include Rick Warren, Beth Moore, Louie Giglio, Henry Blackaby, Bill Hybels, Andy Stanley and Erwin McManus. We are naïve (and arrogant) if we think the only people God is using in this hour are members of our own charismatic subculture.

When I say the charismatic movement is dead I am issuing an obvious challenge. It is time for us to lay aside the past so we can embrace the future. We are in a season when church leaders should be asking the hard questions:

  • Are we locked into the past in an unhealthy way?
  • Are we using language, methods or ministry styles that are stale, dated and ineffective?
  • Are we training younger people to lead the next generation?
  • Are we willing to slaughter any sacred cows and pet doctrines that hinder outreach and church growth?

Old Testament laws forbid people from touching anything dead (see Lev. 21:1,11). That’s because corpses spread disease. Dead things stink and defile.

This is certainly true of dead religion. It can make a church barren and lifeless, even if it is hidden under a superficial coating of trendy songs and casual clothes. It’s not enough to update your music and take off your tie. We need the new life of the Spirit. Something new must happen inside us.

God once told Moses to put a bronze serpent on a stick and hold it in the air. When people looked at the snake they were healed. Centuries later, King Hezekiah destroyed this image because people had begun to worship it (see 2 Kings 18:4). What God meant for good later became a hindrance. Sometimes spiritual things have an expiration date!

Of course God’s moral law never changes, and neither does His character. But He may not move today in the same way He did in 1975; the strategies He gave us in 1990 are not necessarily for churches now. The Holy Spirit doesn’t want us to follow a rote formula; He wants us to seek His presence as He moves through history.

It really doesn’t matter what we label the next movement. What’s important is His renewing presence. Rather than worshiping God around a monument to the past, let’s find out where He’s going and follow the glory cloud.

Jason Crabb

crabbBy Jason Crabb | Spring Hill Music

Jason Crabb, vocalist for The Crabb Family and performer at the Grand Ole Opry and Brooklyn Tabernacle, releases his self-titled solo debut today.

Produced by Tommy Sims and Norro Wilson, the project features appearances by Vince Gill, Sonya Isaacs and members of the Gaither Vocal Band. The release pays tribute to Crabb’s Southern roots, but Sims’ involvement helped bring about a more “soulful sound” on the song “Somebody Like Me,” Crabb said.

“[The song] turned out just awesome,” he said. “It is very humbling to work with a guy who was Bruce Springsteen’s music director for five years.”

Crabb also delivers his “signature song,” “Through the Fire,” written by his father, Gerald, and made popular in his time with the family group. “This is a song I will sing until God calls me home,” he said. “I’ve sung it many nights trying to convince myself that He is going to take care of my situation.”

Other tracks include “Walk on Water,” “I Will Love You,” “Sometimes I Cry,” “One Day at a Time” and “Daystar.”

Crabb said he hopes the songs on the project will hit the listeners at the time they need to hear the messages the most. “All I can say is that I hope whatever the listener is feeling in his or her life at a particular moment, there will be a song on this record that will help him or her find their way through the trial,” he said. “If someone has a bad day or if they are just feeling a little lonely, I hope they will find strength in this recording.”

Reveal Your Glory

yoheBy Vicki Yohe | Sanachie

When Vicki Yohe’s mother passed away only two weeks after being diagnosed with cancer in 2007, Yohe knew it wasn’t the right time to get back into the studio and release another CD. Her mother’s death and other personal experiences have drawn Yohe closer to God. After a four-year recording hiatus, the singer releases Reveal Your Glory this week.

Recorded live at Word of Faith Family Worship Cathedral in Atlanta, the 11-track CD is a combination of dramatic praise and worship ballads that characterize Yohe’s soulful style.

The upbeat sounds of “The Lord Is Good,” ” I Will Sing Praises” and “God That Sees” speak to the goodness and power of God, while worshipful tracks such as “One Moment,” “Your Breakthrough” and the riveting “Medley” call for intimacy with the Father. Other ear-catching cuts include “Continually” and “I’m Not Asking for Anything.”

Listeners drawn to Yohe’s previous projects will consider Reveal Your Glory worth the wait. But it’s her timeless, signature song “Because of Who You Are” that will no doubt draw them into meaningful worship with Jesus.

Thrilla

mr. delBy Mr. Del | Holy South Records

A member of the multiplatinum hard-core rap group Three 6 Mafia, Mr. Del rededicated his life to Christ in 2000 and since then has used his musical talent to spread the gospel. He says his newest album, Thrilla—an acronym for The Real Anointing—shows a “deeper, transparent side of me” and “allows the listener to submerge into the heart of an artist who has overcome weakness and insurmountable obstacles and is now refined and strong through Christ.”

Displaying an about-face approach to music, Mr. Del says his lyrics aren’t just for entertaining but for “piercing the heart … and igniting life-changing action.”

His mission for this new album is to help break down barriers that still exist within the Christian community. “I want this industry to not be so segregated,” he explains. “What we see is that Christian represents Caucasian, and Gospel represents African-American. This isn’t a true representation of the kingdom.”

Today Mr. Del doesn’t just use music to minister to others. He is also the founder and pastor of City of Refuge, which started as a Bible study on the campus of the University of Memphis.
